The Yellow Jackets gymnastics team thought they were going to have a rebuilding year, but it turned into something so much better. For the third year in a row, they took home the state banner, but not before being delivered a crushing blow to their roster.
At the start of the school year, Senior Captain Jacquie Teets was in a devastating car accident. She suffered a broken kneecap and shattered ankle in a head-on car crash. She couldn’t compete all season but spent every practice in the gym with her teammates and helped them with routines.
Even with a major setback, the gymnasts went on to win the District and Regional titles once more. It turned out to be quite the fight for the Back-to-Back State Champions at the State meet. The returning standouts Megan McDonald, Briana Knox, Sara Mogavero, and Caity Cantello fought their way through the competition all year. They were helped along by Samantha Garzione and new teammates Ashley Clark, Alexis Richmond, and Courtney Knox. Every single gymnast stepped up throughout the season to be successful.
The State meet started off extremely emotional for the Yellow Jackets as senior Jacquie Teets stepped up to compete on the uneven bars in the 1st rotation of the night. The doctors told her she would never compete again, but she proved them wrong. With a very modified routine, Jacquie would compete in the final meet of her gymnastics career that would leave the entire gym in tears. And although her uneven bars score wasn’t high enough to count, its value was an inspiration and was immeasurable. Her team rode the emotional wave all the way to a third straight AAA State Title. The Yellow Jackets recorded the highest score in State Meet history with a 150.9. The members of the gymnastics team worked together to achieve an incredible honor for their team and their school.
