Richard Dombrowksy was a student-athlete at Osbourn Park High School from 1994-1998 and competed as a member of the golf, wrestling, and baseball teams. During his high school career, he became the initial recipient of the Pete Ellis Award as the first athlete to earn 12 varsity letters. Richard was a two-time regional qualifier as an individual on the golf team and shortstop on the baseball team. During his wrestling career he set the individual win record with 127 wins and finished with an overall record of 127-26. In the district, Richard earned a runner-up finish as well as three championships. In the regionals he placed third, runner-up, and garnered two championships qualifying for the state tournament all four years. In state competition he placed sixth his junior year and third in his senior campaign.
After his four-year career at Osbourn Park, Richard chose to continue playing baseball at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC. During his tenure the Monarchs carried an overall record of 122-52-1 and earned three regular season conference titles and three appearances in the NCAA Division-III Regionals. During his senior campaign, Methodist finished with a 39-9-1 overall record and held a #1 national ranking for eight consecutive weeks.
As a member of the Monarch baseball program, he became the first player in the programs storied history to be named captain for three years, an award voted on by the players and coaches. After entering the lineup for the first time his freshman year, Richard played in 156 consecutive games (1375 consecutive innings) until his senior season and collegiate career ended at the NCAA Division-III regional in 2002. He set program records for hit by pitches in a season and sacrifice bunts for a season and career. His 23 sacrifices in a season stood as an NCAA record until a player he coached broke the record 14 years later. Richard also currently stands 13th all-time in assists in NCAA Division-III history.
After his playing career ended, Richard began his coaching career at Piedmont College in Demorest, GA. He served as an assistant coach and was promoted to Associate Head Coach in 2009 and served as the school’s Sports Information Director for six years. In 14 years (2003-2016) he helped guide the Lions to an overall mark of 338-275, four conference regular season titles, three conference tournament titles, and two NCAA Division-III regional appearances. The program made their first regional appearance in 2008, finishing with 34 wins, a single season record that still stands. Since leaving the collegiate game in 2016, Richard has taught mathematics at the high school level and currently coaches softball and baseball.
Richard met his wife Adrienne at Methodist where she was a member of the Lady Monarchs softball team. She was a four-year starting centerfielder and edged Richard in their senior year for total hit by pitches. Adrienne still holds individual records for at-bats (548) and hits (211) and was inducted into the Methodist University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019. They have two daughters Olivia and Ava.
