The OP gymnastics team claimed ownership of another perfect season! The gymnastics team went undefeated for the 2nd straight year, winning the District, Regional, and State titles once again. Coming into the season, the girls of the gymnastics team knew they had a AAA State Title to live up to. The team was very excited for the new season and prepared for any new competition. With their dream of heading back to States in the air, the girls practiced harder and kept the intensity up. The team was led by seniors Kendra Burgsteiner, Kayla Deitz, returning powerhouses Jacquie Teets, Megan McDonald, Briana Knox, and Samantha Garzione, as well as starting freshmen Sara Mogavero and Caity Cantello.
The Cedar Run District posed no threat to the team, as they swept the district even with the addition of the new team, Loudoun Valley. They clinched the District title with a team total of 148.975 points.
After winning the district title for the second consecutive year, the team eagerly headed to the regional meet. The meet was tough, but the gymnastics team followed through with another regional victory. They dominated the Northwest Region with 147.6 points.
With consecutive Cedar Run District and Northwest Regional titles, the pressure was on to win another state championship. Impressively, OPG only suits up 6 gymnasts when healthy compared to as many as 18 girls on most teams. At the state meet, Megan McDonald led her team on bars, beam, and vault, but it came down to the final rotation as all 5 competing Yellow Jackets scored at least a 9.225 on floor, led by Jacquie Teets’ 9.55 to hold on against Kellam’s 9.9 and 9.8 scores on vault. The team won their second consecutive State Title. The team gained their deserving championship by 0.95 points.
