Doug Poppe was a multi-sport Varsity athlete at Osbourn Park High School. He participated in basketball, baseball and football. Doug decided after his junior year to focus his attention on basketball. He was recruited by multiple schools and ultimately decided on attending Longwood University.

Life after OP
After a successful 4 years as a student athlete at OP, Doug accepted a full scholarship to play at Longwood University. A classic late bloomer, Doug improved by leaps and bounds since redshirting during his Freshman year. He developed an intense work ethic and discipline that translated into a stellar four years at Longwood.

After a successful college basketball career, Doug returned to OPHS where he shared his love of sports coaching baseball, basketball and football. Doug coached from 1992 - 1998. He coached Girls’ Varsity Basketball, Assistant Boys’ Basketball, Assistant Football and Assistant Baseball. Doug eventually took the Boys’ Head Coaching position at Brentsville High School from 1999 - 2005. He was awarded “Coach of the Year” three years in a row while accumulating over 150 wins.
Doug started his career in Special Education at OPHS, and has worked as a Special Education teacher and SPED Department Chair for 20 years. Doug is now an Assistant Principal at Apex Friendship High School in Apex, North Carolina where he continues to enjoy inspiring the youth of today and creating lifelong learners.
Doug married his high school sweetheart, Ellen Mullinax Poppe, in 1990. They have two wonderful children, Haily and Chase. Doug and Ellen celebrated their thirty-third wedding Anniversary this past September and look forward to many more. Doug and his family reside in Raleigh, North Carolina.
