Description: Erect, tufted, perennial herbs with short woody rhizome; culms 30-65 cm tall, triquetrous above, trigonous below. Leaves basal, acute, flat, scabrid on margins; sheaths up to 20 cm long, purple coloured. Inflorescence compound or decompounds, leafy bracts 4-8, Spikelet linear, weakly flattened, straw-coloured. Glumes membranous, narrowly elliptic, apiculate at apex, keeled, 1-2-nerved along the midrib; keel 3-5-nerved, margins yellowish to pale reddish-brown, nerveless. Stamens 3. Stigmas 3. Nut oblong-elliptic, trigonous, apiculate, greyish-brown, minutely puncticulate.

Uses: Some species are grown as ornamentals in pots and containers. Also it is used in making products such as papers, mats, sombreros. It is also used as a medicine.
