Description: Perennials. Culms to 150 cm long, creeping or stoloniferous, rooting at the nodes; nodes glabrous. Leaves 3-18 x 0.4 - 1.3 cm, lanceolate, base rounded or narrowed, apex acuminate; sheaths to 6 cm long, keeled, ciliate along one margin; ligules membranous. Racemes 2, 4-11 cm long, conjugate. Spikelets 1.5-2 mm long, orbicular or broadly elliptic, creamy-yellow. Lower glume absent. Upper glume 1-1.5 x 1 mm, orbicular or ovate, membranous, long ciliate along the margins. Lower floret barren. Upper floret bisexual. First lemma 1-1.5 x 1 mm, orbicular or ovate, membranous. Second lemma c. 1 x 1 mm, ovate or orbicular, crustaceous, 2-keeled. Stamens 3; anthers yellow. Stigmas white.

Flowering and Fruiting : Through out the year

Uses: A decoction of the leaves, or the crushed spikelets, is used in the treatment of wounds and sores.The leaves are also used in the treatment of fever, debility, stomach troubles and pulmonary afflictions.Young leaves are pounded and then applied as paste onto wounds and cuts.An infusion of the plant is used as a remedy for headaches. Used as an antivenom, a decoction of the whole plant, combined with the oil of Lebrunia bushaie, is rubbed on the bite.The roots are used in the treatment of diarrhea and dysentery.The presence of a haemostatic glucoside, which reduced the time for blood clotting by 50%, has been reported for this species. Agroforestry Uses:The plant spreads by means of stolons, is tolerant of some trampling and also responds well to fairly low cutting; it is occasionally used as a lawn grass.
