Description: An erect forest herb, 2–4 ft. high. Stem: glabrous. Leaves: linear-lanceolate, apex acuminate, thinly pubescent, turning black-green on drying nerves 7-9 pairs; petiole 5 mm long. Spike: axillary and terminal, narrow, glabrous. Bracts: lanceolate, long-aristate. Bracteoles, entire, aristate. Flowers: distant; tepals equal, lanceolate, acuminate, glabrous. Achenes: cylindrical, longitudinally striate, reddish brown.

Flowering and Fruiting: September - December
