As usual we went to lots of gigs. Mostly folky, but a few classical and a couple of jazz concerts.
We started the year with The Bothy Band. They were formed in 1975 by Donal Lunny after he left Planxty. They play traditional Irish tunes - but so well - even now if I hear a band playing jigs and reels I think - very nice, but not as good as The Bothy Band. And amazingly, nearly fifty years later, they reformed for a couple of gigs - so we just had to go!
It feels that there are a lot of farewells at the moment. June Tabor's magnificent tie-up with the Oysterband did a farewell tour. It'll be the last time we'll hear her singing White Rabbit'. And I'm sure it'll be the last time we see Robin Williamson, from the Incredible String Band, who is 81. We also saw Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band's farewell tour. Next year we're going to see farewell tours for Al Stewart, who will be 80 and Peggy Seeger, who will be 90. It feels like the end of something.
Luckily there are loads of excellent young musicians still just about managing to make a living out of music.
