In 1973 Kate and Sue hitched around the west coast of Scotland visiting Skye, Lewis and Harris.
We’ve been back to Skye many times, but Mike had never been to the Outer Hebrides so we decided to go together, retracing, in reverse, some of the steps Kate and Sue took so many years ago.
We started out by flying to Inverness, then drove across to Ullapool. From there we took the ferry to Lewis, stayed a couple of nights in Stornoway, then drove down to Harris. Another ferry took us over to Skye where we stayed for a week in a wonderful house overlooking the Minch. We then took the ferry to Mallaig and drove back to Glasgow via Glencoe.
On Lewis we visited the amazing Callanish stone circle, and the Broch, and Kate got to see the whale bones which she remembered so well.
While we were on Skye we walked into Coire na Creiche and back via the ‘Fairy Pools’ where we got close to the Cuillins without actually climbing them. Lovely! We also took the walk from Elgol to (nearly) Camasunary. We walked to the Coral beach (which John and Holly have a print of), at Neist Point and Rubha Hunish, the most northerly tip of Skye.
We made a pilgrimage to Blaven, where we met a lovely old gentleman who said “It’s the best view in Britain isn't it?”
