Ever since we saw the 1999 total eclipse of the sun in France, we had vowed to see another one somewhere. The eclipse in America this year seemed an obvious choice, as it was likely to be somewhere where the weather was cloud-free.
We decided to combine it with a visit to Yellowstone and the Tetons, just in case there were clouds over the eclipse (so we wouldn’t have completely wasted our trip!). Luckily the sky was clear for the eclipse, and it was a great experience, worth waiting 18 years for!
It’s hard to say what we enjoyed most, after the eclipse, as there were so many amazing things to see. We didn’t expect to find the wildlife particularly exciting, but it was - especially the herds of bison. They were so BIG and so patient. Lots of birdlife too - we saw ospreys on the nest and hunting, pelicans and a bald eagle that soared overhead on our penultimate evening where we watched the sunset from Jackson Lake Lodge.
