My mum spent her last years in the Woodlands Care Centre, gradually becoming less mobile, but no less positive, as the years went by. I used to go and visit her, and I would ask her how she was. “Flourishing!” she would say, or “I’m well. No, more than that, I’m very well”. She was a real tonic to go and visit. If I’m one tenth as positive and uncomplaining as she was I shall be very happy.
She once said to me, “Michael, you’ve tinted your hair grey. I think it suits you!”
These pictures show her at many different times, as a young woman scientist in the lab, as a newly wed on honeymoon, with her parents, with her beloved husband John, with some of her grandchildren, and with her great friends, Ellen and Margaret.
Margaret died a few months before Joan, but for years Joan and Margaret had many wonderful holidays together around Europe, and you can see by these pictures that they had a good time!
Mike and Mark wrote a poem together, about Margaret and Joan, to help them think about things.
