We seem to be back to our old level of gigs now, which is nice. We saw lots of streamed gigs on the TV over the pandemic, but it's not the same as actually being there.
Folk by the Oak was very good, but hot! We enjoyed all the gigs, but there were some standout ones like Karine Polwart and Dave Milligan performing songs from their album "Still As Your Sleeping", and Lady Maisery at King's Place, with their new album. The Furrow Collective at King's Place were also brilliant! Actually they were all good...
We ended the year seeing a "Winter" show called "Awake Arise" at a stunning place called the Grand Junction, actually inside a church near Paddington. Since Kate Rusby, a couple of days later, was cancelled, this seemed like the start of Christmas. They even had mulled wine!
Spell Songs 2 at the Folk By The Oak Festival. A whole set of new songs inspired by "The Lost Words" of Robert MacFarlane.
Chris Wood. Brilliant as always.
The legendary Andy Irvine.
The wonderful Furrow Collective - at King's Place, London
Fairport Convention at The Apex. They did "Sloth"!
Al Stewart at the Corn Exchange. He can still cut it at 77.
Katriona Gilmore & Jamie Roberts at Green Note. A fantastic show.
Lauren MacColl and Rachel Newton with "Heal & Harrow" about witch trials...
Kate Rusby, at Cadogan Hall, celebrating 30 years of performing.
Karine Polwart, performing songs from "Still As Your Sleeping", one of the best albums of 2021
Rowan Rheingans performing "Dispatches On The Red Dress".
Our first return to classical music at The Corn Exchange since the pandemic. Maxim Vengerov was pretty good on that old violin of his. And The Karelia Suite!
Lucy Farrell at Green Note, London.
Tony Hall at the Black Fen Folk Club in Cambridge.
Mad Professors return to Royal Holloway! Yay!
Peggy Seeger (87). One of the most inspiring concerts of the year. She hadn't lost any of her fire and wit. Highly recommended.
Nancy Kerr & james Fagan. Always so good, and heart warming somehow.
RANT at Stapleford Granary.
Sam Sweeney and his band, with amazing guitar by Louis Campbell.
The Rheingans Sisters. Anna asked me if I was practising my banjo!
Richard Thompson at Folk By The Oak was stupendous. On top form...
Sharon Shannon.
Lady Maisery at King's Place London. Possibly the best gig of the year - launching their first album for six years. Beautiful songs, beautiful harmonies...
Trish Clowes at Wigmore Hall. The launch of her album "View With A Room".
The Unthanks at The Apex, Bury St Edmunds.
Awake Arise (Lady Maisery, Jimmy Aldrige and Kit Hawes) at the amazing Grand Junction venue. One of the best "winter" shows.
