2015 Gigs

HOME 2015 FAMILY NORMAN GLASGOW LAKES ITALY WALCOTT GIGS VISITS OUTDOORS MISCELLANEOUS

We measure our life out in gigs (a bit like old J. Alfred Prufrock and his coffee spoons) - we always like to have several booked. This year we found there were a whole load of newish folk bands popping up. We’re very excited that there are still new bands to discover in this area.

Nancy Kerr, the BBC folk singer of the year, features in many of them. She has developed into a fantastic songwriter. We particularly like the ‘Elizabethan Sessions’ CD. Also we really like Lucy Farrell, a relatively new discovery for us.

Some of the newer folk stars had formed a Folk-Rock band! False Lights they’re called. Their version of Skewball took us right back.

Andy Cutting, one of our favourites, was also involved in forming two new bands: an instrumental band called Leveret and one with Nancy Kerr and Martin Simpson (Simpson Cutting & Kerr).

We also saw a few old favourites as well - Christy Moore was wonderful!

On the South Bank in London there was a concert for Shirley Collins’s 80th birthday! She didn’t sing, but various singers re-created the seminal album ‘No Roses’ and played the whole thing. Other songs originally done by her were sung by various people, including Alasdair Roberts and Graham Coxon (from Blur)

We tried out the Folk By The Oak Festival for the first time this year, and really enjoyed it. We saw Nancy Kerr, Lady Maisery, The Unthanks, and Bellowhead. This is probably the last of many Bellowhead gigs for us, as they are calling it a day in 2016.
