During the lockdowns we used to sit down after lunch and watch music on youTube - mostly Baroque. One of our favourite orchestras was the Netherlands Bach Society. On an impulse we decided we'd like to see them live, and planned a short trip to Amsterdam for one of their concerts. It turned out there was also a major Vermeer exhibition on at the same time, and we somehow managed to get tickets for that.
We had a very relaxing time - staying in a house just outside the city, and travelling in each day by train. We wandered round the canals, ate in the cafés, and generally enjoyed ourselves.
The Vermeer exhibition was a bit of a revelation. They always say that his paintings seem to glow with their own light, and it's true, they do. I don't know how he does it.
The concert was fun too - in Naarden, a small medieval town on the other side of Amsterdam. We recognised loads of the players from watching them on TV, and saw their charismatic leader for, as it turned out, his last concert with the orchestra.
We also met up with Yaiza, a Spanish friend of Mike's from his AHT days.
