Rationale: In today’s data-driven world, we are constantly surrounded by a vast influx of information. While it might seem like there is an abundance of data available, the real challenge lies in effectively utilizing this data to generate actionable insights. Without a clear strategy, we risk accumulating data without deriving any meaningful value from it, leading to a scenario where we are "data rich but information poor." By implementing structured protocols and leveraging advanced tools, we can transform this data into valuable insights, enhancing decision-making and driving more informed actions.
Learning Intention: Participants will learn how to use structured discussion protocols to analyze data effectively, improve student outcomes, and make the most of their time. They will also practice applying the Ladder of Inference to enhance their data discussions.
Success Criteria: Participants will know they are successful when they…
Can distinguish between the steps of data analysis using the Ladder of Inference
Can successfully talk through the steps of the “What Do You See, What Do You Make of It” protocol
Have made low-inference observations about a set of data
Have explored multiple assumptions about a set of data after verbalizing low-inference observations
Have identified an actionable next step based on the insights about a set of data
Instructions: Before engaging in the Data-Driven Practices module, please view the Data-Driven Practices: Start Here slide show below.
To view the slide show, place your mouse in the top right-hand corner of the slide and click on the grey box with the white arrow to begin. To listen to the audio associated with each slide, click the speaker icon in the lower right corner of each slide.
Each slide has a voice recording that provides further details or instructions. Please ensure your speakers are on and the volume is up.
Total Module Time: ~65-75 min
Access the note taking template by clicking on the button above that says "Note Taking Template". A new window will open, prompting you to make a copy of the template. Hit the blue "Make a Copy" button (see image below). This will create a copy in Google Drive for your personal use.

Step 1: What Do You See (2 min) Participants will silently review the photo and write down everything they “see” on the left hand column. Remember to stay low on the ladder and only write down facts.
Step 2: What Do You Make of It (2 min) Participants will silently evaluate the data and make some inferences. Write down “what you make of it” on the right hand column.
Activity: What do you see? What do you make of it?- Data (Suggested Time: 8 minutes)
Step 1: What Do You See (3 min) Participants will silently review the data and write down everything they “see” on the left hand column. Remember to stay low on the ladder and only write down facts.
Step 2: What Do You Make of It (3 min) Participants will silently evaluate the data and make some inferences. Write down “what you make of it” on the right hand column.
