Rationale: Almost everything a teacher does in the classroom affects student learning. In the past, teachers would ask, "What will work?" Now, thanks to advanced research and abundant information about teaching, we know which practices have the greatest impact on student learning. To enhance the effect of Teacher Clarity on student achievement, teachers need the skills and tools to assess how well students understand the material. By using purposeful and effective questioning, teachers can encourage active engagement, set high expectations, and identify where students stand in their learning. Most importantly, asking the right questions at the right time helps reinforce student ownership of their learning.
Learning Intention: Participants will be able to explain how questioning helps teachers understand student learning in relation to learning goals and success criteria. They will also create a plan to effectively use questioning throughout the year, including support for staff.
Success Criteria: Teams will know they are successful when they:
Can explain how questioning connects to student ownership and teacher clarity.
Have a shared understanding of the "look fors" document for questioning.
Can outline their next steps for implementing their focus area (whether continuing with teacher clarity or shifting to questioning).
