by Adelaide Kota

Halloween is just around the corner which means spooks, spices, and, of course, costumes! For those of you who have no idea what you’re going to dress up as, this article is here to help you! Here are some costume ideas for Halloween 2022!

#1 Cereal Killer

Are you looking for a punny, relatively simple costume? This one may be for you:

There are various routes you can take with your Cereal Killer costume. Save up those tiny cereal boxes you get at breakfast, or rally your friends into collecting some with you. Cut a slit into the boxes, and stab a plastic knife through them. Then glue all your tiny cereal boxes onto a basic outfit. You’ll be left with an easy yet effective Cereal Killer costume!

#2 Candy

It’s safe to say Halloween is mostly about candy. No matter if you like chocolates or gummies, candy bars or candy buttons, there’s sure to be some corner of the internet that has a sweet costume that suits your tastes.

For example, M&M’s! Print and cut out the classic M&M’s “m” and glue it onto a solid colored shirt. This idea would work great if you want to coordinate with a group of people, and it’s pretty simple. Don’t like chocolate? Substitute the “m” with an “s” for Skittles. Pair with matching or plain bottoms, and you’ve got a cute and effective costume.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Lifesavers, jelly beans, gumball machines– the possibilities are endless. If you can dream it, the internet probably has the answers.

Though candy canes may be a bit out of season, it’s still a possibility. (Image found here)

#3 Medusa

The queen of snakes and stone herself, Medusa, is not a costume to be undertaken lightly. Although this one may take a bit more effort to put together, the look works really well and seems very fun to make.

The centerpiece of this costume is, of course, the wreath of snakes surrounding Medusa’s head. Take a sturdy headband, a bunch of plastic snakes, a hot glue gun, and set to work. Glue the snakes along the headband and interweaving with each other. You can spread them out as much or as little as you want, depending on the amount of them you have and their size. Paint the headband a color of your choosing, using spray paint or regular paint. Dress yourself up in an ensemble in a coordinating color, and crown yourself with your diadem of serpents. Voila! You look as mystical and magical as Medusa herself.

#4 Cactus

Though cacti are prickly, this costume is an easy costume to make.

Take a green shirt that you don’t mind altering, and a bunch of white pipe cleaners. Fold the pipe cleaners in half to create little spiky, v-shaped pieces, and glue or sew them all around the shirt. Pair this creation with matching green pants, or tan ones to resemble a pot. If you so desire, you can glue fake flowers onto a headband as a finishing touch. And just like that, you have a cute halloween costume!

#5 Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Cloudy with Chance of Meatballs is a classic movie, and what better duo is there than Sam Sparks and Flint Lockwood?

For Sam, find yourself a light blue zip up hoodie and a pink shirt. Pair this ensemble with black pants and some comfortable shoes. If you so desire, put on a blonde wig and put it into a ponytail. For the finishing touch, find some wide, square rimmed black glasses and a reporter’s microphone.

Your Flint Lockwood costume would consist of a few integral pieces. Find yourself a dorky graphic t-shirt– the dorkier, the better. Put on a pair of black pants. Ideally, glittery spray-on shoes would be preferred, but if you don’t have those, comfortable sneakers would work just fine. Top it off with a lab coat or unbuttoned white shirt. If you wish, use some hair gel to stick your hair up wildly. Bonus points if you find a talking monkey, but you may be unable to acquire one of those.

Just like that you have the foody and smart duo of Flint Lockwood and Sam Sparks!

#6 Ratatouille

Another movie with an iconic duo is from Ratatouille. Remy and Linguini are the best of friends, and an astonishingly easy costume to pull off.

For your Linguini costume, find yourself an all white ensemble. It’s even better if you can get your hands on a chef’s hat like he wears in the movie. Should that fall through, you could also fold a piece of paper into pleats and attach it to a headband to create a similar effect.

If you wish to be Remy, all you need to do is acquire a rat costume. This could be as simple as a headband and a gray ensemble, or you could go all out. The choice is yours. Don’t forget a wooden spoon to tie in that you are a cooking rat. Just like that, you have become Remy.

#7 The Princess Bride

You want an adorable duo costume? As you wish! Westly and Buttercup from The Princess Bride are a really cute pairing, and pretty easy to put together.

If you wish to be Buttercup, find yourself a red dress. The more flowy and medieval it looks, the better. Next acquire some sort of decorative ribbon, and tie it around your waist, making sure to leave long tails. You could also use just a regular belt and loop it around your waist.

For a Westly costume, get an all black ensemble. While any clothes would give the desired effect, a more formal black outfit would probably give the best effect. Put on a pair of boots and, if attainable, a black eye mask. To finish it off, put on a fake mustache and black gloves.

Here’s an example of a Westly costume. You could put on a black scarf around your head to complete the look if you wish. (Image found here)

And there you have a Buttercup and Westly costume. I know it may seem inconceivable, but this costume is very easy, and has great results.

There are many different characters in the film as well, so you’re sure to find someone that you want to replicate.
