Genesis Gebil, is not only a senior at Central High School, but also the Senior Class President, El Presidente De Gobierno, President of African American Club, and she runs Students for Social Justice and Liberation (SSJL).
Gebil is extremely passionate about her role as President of African American club. She makes sure she has a personal relationship with each member of African American Club and she also makes sure “they have an open space to feel however they want and talk however they want.”
Gebil, in regards to her post-secondary education, wants to make sure that the black and brown student body feels heard. She also says, “there’s a lot of things in this school and in this world trying to bring a lot of black and brown students down and my goal is to do the opposite of that and push back against that.”
In regards to her future career, Gebil says, “I want to be a therapist with a focus on the black community, especially with black youth because their mental health and feelings aren’t talked about enough and the kids who do struggle with stuff like that, come to African American Club so if I can keep that same care and compassion, so I feel like I can achieve my goal of becoming a therapist”. Gebil has dedicated so much of her life to social justice work and has become a figure at Central High School as a safe space for many black and brown students.
When asked, how do you balance it all, Gebil responded, “I plan everything out and I fall on the backs of my supporters, like you [Ororo Taylor], Jasmine [O’Conner], and my people who help me with SSJL.” She goes on to say “I really try to find a way to delegate tasks in the best way possible.” But, Gebil believes being on the forefront of so many activities helps her mental health. She says, “all of the things I am a part of help my mental health in a way because I want to do them, so the fact that I’m even able to go to African American Club, run SSJL and be a part of so many groups it’s like a privilege, it gives me time to connect with people and that’s really what I love doing so in a way that helps my mental health because I’m having a fun time when I do all these things.”
A class act, Genesis Gebil will for sure be the face of change in the senior class of 2022 from her leadership ability, adaptive nature, daring voice and drive, it is obvious to so many of us why Genesis Gebil is a leader in her own right.
