As the class of 2022 comes closer and closer to their final days at Central High School, the Chronicle is continuing to feature outstanding Seniors in order to highlight their achievements over the past four years. One of these Seniors is Vy Nguyen, a notable leader, athlete, and student who has had an enormous impact on her community.
Vy’s many extracurricular activities include being a member of the Marching Maroons for all four years of high school (spending three of them as a drum major), playing tennis for two years, running cross country for two years, running and pole vaulting with the track team for three years, and leading Girls Who Code (a Central club designed to support women in STEM fields during and after high school.)
Aside from her musical, athletic, and computer programming talents, Vy keeps busy outside of school as well by learning Vietnamese. She reflected on expanding her Vietnamese skills throughout high school, saying that “in my household we primarily speak Vietnamese, but because I've spent my entire life in the United States, my English is way better than my Vietnamese so I've lost a lot of my ability to have conversations going into high school. But these days I've been trying to improve my skills and I can say it has gotten better!”
At Central, Vy’s favorite classes have been US history and Physics. She commented that the teachers that had the biggest impact on her were Ms. Munroe, who she said was “very kind, and really cared about one's learning experience”; Ms. Whiteley, who “introduced [me] to a multitude of books that connected back to my culture and encouraged me to actively connect my background to things relative to my class, which isn't done in a lot of classes"; and Ms. Sage, who “was always a teacher I could rely on to give me the best advice and work with me through things I felt were really difficult, which motivated me to work harder."
Vy gave one big piece of advice for anyone new to Central high school: “Enjoy all the moments you have! I think in high school especially it's really easy for students to get caught up in the workload that they have and neglect the importance of having time to yourself to have fun."
