Have you ever thought of learning a new skill or hobby? Is shooting a bow and arrow in your future? Did you know you can make that happen at Central?
The Central Archery Club started during the 2011-2012 school year. The club was started by Mrs.Creek, her husband Jay Creek, and Jeff Reinhold. Archers need to attend the mandatory info meeting in order to sign up. The info meeting is usually in October, and practices are held in the North Gym.
This year is the largest team this program has had with a total of 106 archers. The amount of athletes caused the need for two teams, a varsity and junior varsity team.
The team travels to various locations for tournaments like Georgetown, Armstrong, Chicago, Danville, and here in Champaign.
Archery is a sport based on focus, skill, and the ability to stay calm. Strength is not a requirement. The bow can be adjusted (by pull weight), but the real skill comes from focus and calmness.
Mrs.Creek, when asked what started her interest in archery, said, “My kids were very interested in archery in middle school. I wanted them to be able to do something they enjoyed during high school, so my husband and I decided we would try to coach the team. Since all three middle schools have an archery program now, we are getting more and more students that have experience, but you don't have to have experience to join the team”.
Mr. Creek said, “Archery is a great sport that teaches more than just shooting a bow. It has taught me how to be mentally strong and focused, by learning how to ignore distractions and focus on my shot. It has also taught me patience and discipline. Those are all things that you can learn and apply to other areas of your life, not just in archery. To be a good archer takes a lot of work and commitment”.
