Women in History You Should Know About

Karina Josephitis

Did you know that until 1920, women were not allowed to vote, work, or receive equal pay? Women have been viewed as lesser for centuries before, which was only moderately changed in the early 20th century. Women were seen as purposeless other than serving and entertaining men. Obviously, this statement is completely false.

All the way from the brilliant scientists to strong activists, and literary geniuses, here are some women in history which without we wouldn't be where we are today.

Famous scientist Marie Curie was the first person to found the science of radioactivity. Her newfound discoveries expanded incredibly and helped launch effective cures for cancer.

Astounding rights activist Rosa Parks refused her seat on the bus for a white man which helped spark the Civil Rights movement which eventually progressed into winning equal rights.

The very talented Ada Lovelace was considered to be the first woman computer programmer, not only the first woman, but she was the first computer programmer in history.

The extraordinary scientist Rosalind Franklin discovered the double helix in DNA, whereas scientists claim the “secret of life” had been unlocked.

Literary genius, Jane Austen has become a very known figure in the literature field. Her novels have gone on to become some of the most renowned pieces of work ever written.

The remarkable Amelia Earhart, a pilot known mostly for her sudden and unresolved disappearance, was the first person to fly from the Red Sea to India. Over time she continued breaking speed and distance records as she also broke the record for women’s altitude in aviation.

Finding extraordinary and inspiring women isn’t very hard, Central contains our very own prodigious women, not only from the current time but also from former student bodies.

As a special addition to Women’s History Month, in September of 1980, seven female Central students joined the school’s boys’ cross country team. The article shares, “Central’s cross country team looks a little different this year than ever before, instead of a bunch of guys running all over the place, there are a bunch of guys and a few girls running all over the place. Central has never had a girls cross country team and still does not, but these girls have decided to run anyway.”

These seven girls joining the boys cross country team for the first time ever in Central history is incredibly important and a huge step for many girls seeking inspiration.
