As you drive north towards Central High School, you might smell the baking of warm bread on the corner of Prospect and Springfield. Our local bakery, Pekara, has been putting forward an effort to contribute donations to Ukraine during their ongoing conflict with Russia. A glossy, buttery roll, with a garlic flavor, perfect to be eaten with soup, made into a sandwich, or just enjoyed on its own. In these efforts, all of the profits go directly to the International Rescue Committee helping Ukrainian refugees. This organization reaches out to those in humanitarian crises. They provide economic stability, availability to education, and healthcare to many who have been affected by the war. As proceeds come in, the first $10,000 will be matched by Pekara’s founder company, Central Illinois Bakehouse.
A Central student who has gotten the opportunity to enjoy this bread had many great things to say. “When it first came out I had it. My mom's friend brought it over when I was sick. The employees explained the idea behind it. My mom thought this was fake. I thought it was siphoning money. Normally these kinds of things don't go 100% to Ukraine. But this one did, which is really cool. There are not a lot of places that do that. The bread was super fluffy and the sauce had some spice to it. I would definitely order it again.” All throughout the interview, the great quality of Pekara’s baking was constantly mentioned.
Personally, I’m excited to get a chance to try out this fresh bread this week. So next time, on your drive or walk, check out Pekara and feel good about giving to those in need while you give good to your body.
