World-renowned author, poet, actress, and Civil Rights activist Maya Angelou has received her likeness on a quarter which is now in circulation in the U.S, making her the first black woman to be featured on a quarter dollar. It is one of the first of a series of coins that will feature and celebrate accomplished American women, and the set can be bought by enrolling in the American Women Quarters Program.
Maya Angelou is most known for her works such as her autobiographical book “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings'' and her award-winning poem Still I Rise. Angelou is a three-time Grammy winner, three-time NAACP winner, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom holder.
Angelou used her voice to speak against the injustices in America during the Civil Rights era, in her poems like The Mask, a poem describing the hidden features of black people on the daily, while also uplifting them.
One of her most notable quotes is “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.
Angelou has cemented herself in history as a literary icon, from her published works to her spoken word poetry.
