The girl’s soccer season is about to start, and I was able to interview some of our Maroons to talk about the upcoming season.
Junior Meg Rossow “expects to be successful” this season, and hopes to win regionals, because they were denied an official regional title last year due to Covid-19. Coach Steven Whiteley hopes to “be competitive in every game this season.” He said, “[the team] will have to take advantage of their goal scoring opportunities, and be strong in defense.” Team members seem to have good attitudes and expectations for the upcoming season, such as Junior Katherine Wagner. After being asked what her hopes are for the team this season, she said she “wants to be more successful, while still having fun.”
This team is ready to hit the ground running; they’ve “taken advantage of the new turf field at McKinley” said Coach Whiteley, and they seem ready for anything. Sophomore Cricket Wagner shared her determined mindset, and stated that she’s “just looking for a lot of wins this season.” A big factor for Coach Whiteley will be not letting bad results negatively impact the whole season. Another affecting factor will be the loss of last year’s Seniors. When asked about some obstacles she could expect to face, Meg Rossow stated the team will see a possible lack of depth compared to last year, as a lot of talented Seniors have left.
Something a lot of players are excited about are the games upcoming against cross town rivals Centennial and St. Thomas Moore. The Maroons, who are 2-0 at the start of the season with 2 comfortable wins over Charleston and University High, will go into one of these rivalries at home against St. Thomas Moore on April 2nd.
If you want to look out for specific players on the pitch, make sure you watch for the Seniors: Audrey Larson, Claudia Larrison, Kinsley Stillman, and Lainey Somers. Coach Whiteley says he’s “looking forward to the impact they can have on the team, and the leadership they can provide.”
Good luck to the girl’s soccer team with their upcoming season!
