The main idea that guided my artwork for this piece (which is my second piece) was like the first my also inquiry question which is, “ How does music impact/ affect me?” I started by thinking about what materials I could use that connected to music and that brought me to the idea of using vinyl records because I have so many lying around my room and on my walls. I dont use these records to play music so it wouldn't matter if I ruined them by painting on them for the sake of this art piece. The main idea that guided the message of my artwork is a song by the artist Lana Del Ray. She sings a song called “Happiness Is a Butterfly” I thought about how I could represent happiness without just drawing a smiley face or something basic like that. Ss I thought that the idea and title of the song fit perfectly with my act idea and my representation of happiness and how mystique impacts me in that way.
I used a vinyl record because that connects to my idea of music and how playing music impacts me and makes me happy. To prep the vinyl record for the acrylic paint that I used to paint my design, I did some layers of gesso so that the paint would stick to the recond the I painted the whole record white so that I had a blank surface so that the colors would appear different because of the fact that the record is black.
I did start over with the project one time. At first, I didn't realize that I would need to prime the record with gesso so I just began painting on it and soon after realized that the record being black turned the colors of the paint I was using to different colors. After going to the store and buying gesso I primed my record and sketched my design over again. But the gesso didn't dry completely clear so you could see all the brush strokes from painting the gesso so that didn’t look very good so I started over on a new record and had to sketch my whole design again which took a lot of work and a lot of time. My final product turned out great though and I learned from my mistakes and errors along the way to make my final product what it is!
