My Superhero

Artist Statement:

The story with this art piece was to create an inquiry question for a sustained investigation. My question was "How can I create portraits of important people in my life by using paper and different things that remind me of them?"

This art piece relates to my life because the person who is involved with this piece is my dad. My dad has had a huge impact on me as a person, my style, and my interests. My dad and I have a complicated relationship because sometimes I don't laugh at his jokes or I just am in a bad mood which right now is hard to get out of, and he feels like I don't listen to his stories or care about the interesting fact about this specific song we're listening to but I do listen and I do care. It's just hard to express the way I feel when I just have so many other things going on in my mind. My dad loves Marvel comics and grew up with them in his childhood and always wanted to be in one. His favorite character is Spiderman and I wanted this piece to surround a specific interest of his, which is why he is on the cover.

The process of this piece was getting an idea of what materials I could use to connect to the piece itself. I decided to continue with paper to carve out a picture of him to make it pop out of the book. I wanted the comic to be realistic so I printed out images from different comics then glued them on to make it a book look. I made the image pop out so that it could be the center of the piece.
