CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Once Demon arrives at the front yard of the Mound Fort Civil War Quarters, he notices that everything sounds quiet as though there was nobody around. That’s a usual predicament when he usually arrives here with the Indian band late at night. Most of the time they wait until the fort commander and his men are sound asleep for the night and the place seems totally dark without any candlelight shining through the windows.
Then they start their attacks and skirmishes to rouse them up from their beds in the middle of night to catch them unaware of what’s really going on, although as time went on the fort commander and his men have become more accustomed and used to these distractions on almost a nightly or weekly basis.
Many of times they end up doing nothing waiting inside while keeping quiet and away from the windows from when the Indian band and the Ute Indian Warriors shoot their arrows trying to scare them and drive them off of their ancestral burial grounds. But no matter how hard they have seemed to try to push them and shew them away, the Mormon pioneers never give up with their repeated retaliations.
In fact, there are times when the Indian bands have brought guns taking a few peep shots knocking out pieces and chunks of the brick that align the walls of the Civil War Quarters. And there have been times when the windows have been shot out with gunshots with bullet shells flying in to them or arrow that have smashed through them a few times here and there. However, most of the time the arrows bounce off of the brick walls while some of them find their way in to the roof or the birch wood of the door frames to the house.
Nonetheless lately, there hasn’t been too much happening down or around the Mound Fort Artillery Base area or the Civil War Quarters area down the hill from there and Demon realizes this very much so. And there’s no doubt that Demon would like to change that very much with his own revenge plot that in some ways has rather gone sour for the time being.
Of course, that’s because the Indian bands have to abide by Eagle Feather Ute Indian and his peaceful agreement that he had made with Jim Bridger a time before. Yet Demon doesn’t really understand the language of it all, although he has some instinct to a certain behavior of its truth. Moreover Demon feels that he still has to take certain measures upon his own reckoning and that is exactly why he chose to leave and head out on his own for once as he had did a time before when he wolf mother first left and was killed for game.
Then on the other hand it seems that there is nobody outside and they must all be sound asleep. Still he stops and looks around for a moment from about twenty yards away staring at the front of the house along with the east side of the house. After a few minutes, he chooses to take another look at the blood tree where his mother had been slain. And he also figures that this would be the appropriate time to take a look around as much as possible considering there were the distractions of the Indian band.
Once at the blood tree which is the closest to the house in the backyard, Demon looks around and takes another smell to it with his keen senses. However this time around the scent is a lot less potent than the first time he had followed his wolf mother here. Yet he had never really had the chance to look around elsewhere with all of the Ute Indians in the way every time he came here with them.
It seems to him that he was kept and held back from finding the truth to some missing details. And these details are hard for him to comprehend such as the skinning of his wolf mother which he doesn’t seem to take to lightly. Just then Demon turns and mover over to the salt cellar that seems to catch his nose as the smells of all kinds of preserving jars take over. Quickly Demon mover towards the back end of the salt cellar and sniffs around until making his way around to the west side where the stairway leads down a few steps to the inside. Immediately he sees the table there which he must have overlooked the other times he tries to come around.
Then he notices that the door to the salt cellar is open towards the inside exposing a few steps leading down there. He sniffs at the table for a few moments noticing a smell that reminds him somewhat of his wolf mother, although the tracings is more or less diminished from all of the rain and snow that has fallen since that time.
Quickly he loses interest outside and decides to head in to the salt cellar to take a look at what’s inside there. Right away, as he walks down the steps, Demon notices a rancid smell as though something were rotting. Once he reaches the inside of the salt cellar he turns his eyes to the shelf above noticing some jars of what appears to be preserved jars of food that may have been sitting there for quite a long time.
Some of them may be months old while others may be years old, but nonetheless they seem to catch his attention considering the fact that he is trying to discover even more remains of his wolf mother if he is to revenge her death.
Soon Demon looks down with his keen sense of eyes and seeing in the dark noticing some more jars down on the floors which are easier for him to get to. After smelling around for a few moments he notices a certain odor that smells kind of similar to what could in his mind possibly be his wolf mother’s remains.
Nevertheless the jar lid is closed shut and there are some other jars right next to it. Now he decides to move the others out of the way to separate the jar he wants from the other ones. When he does he tries to roll the jar away from the wall of the salt cellar to the middle of the room on the floor.
Afterwards he sniffs around and then he looks inside just noticing something that could be virtually anything. Moments later he tries to kick it around and bite at it with his mouth while putting his teeth in to the lid with no prevail. Finally he stops biting at the lid and then he kicks it around a few more times before stopping.
By now, Demon is thinking of giving up on trying to bite in to or open the preserve jar to find out what’s inside, although whatever it is inside the preserve jar reminds him of his wolf mother for some reason or other. Next Demon sniffs around in the dark with his keen eyes at some more preserve jars for a few minutes before starting to give up on it all.
Then Demon leaves and heads past the table at the back side of the salt cellar. Soon Demon finds his way at the back of the Civil War Quarters where the access panel to the underneath of the flooring of the house is located. The fire pit in the front of the access panel is cleaned out of ashes considering that they haven’t been using it for keeping the place warm lately.
And this makes one easy chance at trying to see if he can find his way underneath the place. Quickly he steps down in to the footings of the fire pit and pushes the access panel with his paw opening it.
Now he enters and walks in to the crawl space which leads in to two different directions of the underneath of the house. The first direction leads straight back to the access panel in the floor that enters int o the front room of the Civil War Quarters. Also there’s the other direction that leads underneath the living room of the Civil War Quarters and then back around to the access panel of the floor the other way.
However once his eyes adjust to the extreme darkness underneath the house, Demon notices that there are a many of things packed and stored there in the crawl space. Many of the things are belongings that belong to the fort commander and his roommates who stay with him in the Civil War Quarters. Much of the items are packed away clothes and army uniforms that have been left by other soldiers who have come and gone back east.
There are also a lot of other things that are packed away in wooden boxes that are lined up in the crawl space restricting some of the room except for a path that leads around just big enough for him to move around enough to explore the area. Nevertheless Demon moves slowly as his eyes continue to adjust the further he enters towards the front of the house from underneath the floorboards in the crawl space.
As he moves head, he tries to miss everything that seems to be in the way. There are a number of boxes that are staggered sticking out more in some places than in other places. To him, the underneath of the crawl space looks like a total cluster of a mess considering that even the Ute and Shoshoni Indians are more organized than the soldiers of the Mound Fort Artillery Base are with their belongings.
Nevertheless he ends up bumping in to a box or two making some noises that he realizes may have been heard by the members of the Civil War Quarters on top of the flooring above him. Just then, Demon stops and waits listening for any movement that may have been stirred up from his entering towards the access panel of the crawl space.
Moments go on by and there are no sounds of anyone waking up or moving around to his best of knowledge that he gets from relying on his instincts. In fact, his instincts have become keener from all of the days he has spent hunting and learning from the Ute Indian clan that has brought him up since they have found him the day of his wolf mother’s death.
And it’s no surprise that he has spent so many days practicing with his sneaking off to see if the Indians of the clan know everything that goes on within their Indian campsite. But of course to his understanding they sleep very light considering that they are always feeling the threat of Manifest Destiny affecting their ways of life.
Yet on the other hand, it’s almost the opposite extreme bearing in mind the fact that the Ute and Shoshoni Indians will do anything in their power to push anything out of the way of their ancestral burial grounds even if it means white settlers, or pioneers. Still Demon waits a few more minutes depending on his patience with stalking the Civil War Quarters that the fort commander happens to live in.
As Demon waits, he feels like he’s a part of his only war department underneath the Civil War Quarters as he prepares his thoughts for the plan of attack on his own conniving. After some more times lapses, Demon makes his way towards the access panel of the crawl space. He sits there waiting directly underneath it as though he were sizing up the place for a later time. Now he feels that he has his own privacy along with getting to know the place a little better.
And then Demon doesn’t seem to overlook the idea of how he’s a little older and wiser now than many months ago or let alone about six months ago since the last memories of his mother were brought to mind. Just then, Demon hears the sounds of what appears to be slow moving footsteps moving towards the access panel to the crawl space right above him. Once the steps and sounds stop, Demon steps back a few steps getting ready to dart off.
The place remains quiet for a moment. For now the sounds of someone walking up above in the room where the crawl space access panel lies stays silent. Demon turns and looks towards the way out just in case someone was to pull the wood floored slab from the access frame.
In fact, Demon can actually see the cracks around the access panel as a little light seems to show its way forth which appears to be from a kerosene lantern that has been turned up obviously. Once the lantern lighting shines through, Demon decides to step back a little bit getting ready to leave in a flash of a second.
Just then, there’s a voice coming from someone inside the Civil War Quarters who was woken by Demon and his knocking around things down below. However he doesn’t recognize the voice that he hears coming from Nicolaus that says, “I thought I heard something coming from the crawl space!”
Split seconds later, another voice coming from the fort commander blunders, “I didn’t hear anything. It’s probably a stray cat or dog!”
Thereafter another voice comes from Peter who heard something as well even though he was in the middle living room that relates, “That sounded like a big cat or dog if it was one!”
A silence rings in their ears for a few seconds considering that Demon is underneath them in a motionless state wondering if he should leave and come back another time. Nevertheless Demon takes another few steps back while trying not to scuffle up any noises by accident. There are a few things in the way as he makes his way the other way around some of the supports and footings to the walls of the middle room.
Eventually he scoots his way quietly back towards the gate by the fire pit before hearing the fort commander’s voice averring, “Well, maybe someone out to go down there and take a look!”
As a final point, Nicolaus was the first one to notice the noise so he figures that maybe he ought to be the one to peek his head down there with the kerosene lamp to see what the noise is coming from. Without another voice coming forth Demon decides to step back some more reaching his way out past the fire pit in to the back yard of the Civil War Quarters. At that time the a noise is heard coming from the access panel of the crawl space as it is removed and opened for inspection.
Now Demon makes the decision to leave and split the scene. After he leaves the back yard of the Civil War Quarters, he stops and turns taking another lasting glance before heading to the little tree fort that the Indian band has abandoned since the peaceful reunion with the Mound Fort Artillery Base.
As he looks back he can hear some rummaging around that is pretty slight, although other than that he feels like he has given them quite a stir for the time being. And now he feels that he will just wander around some of the Indian band’s tree forts before heading back up the Ogden River Canyon.
Eventually he wants to come back and give the Mormon settler’s and the soldiers of the Civil War Quarters more than they have bargained for with what they have done to his wolf family. However right now he figures that he should play it cool and return back on time before anyone notices him missing. And if they do they won’t have any idea of where he’s been and the revenge plot that he has taken upon his own reckoning.
Soon he reaches the Indian band’s tree fort and turns back to the Civil War Quarters taking another look at how he liked it when the Indians were shooting arrows and sneaking around the fort commander’s home quite frequently. The times that he’s thinking about in his mind remind him of why he must return again and again until there is no more peace left in this house or the next. Moments later, Demon turns and leaves embarking along the stretch of trees heading towards the Ogden River.
After Demon leaves the Civil War Quarters, Nicolaus had taken a look down in the crawl space and found nothing. But by now Peter is still walking around outside taking a look around to see what the noise was they heard. So far they have thought about the wolf they saw a many a times come around now and then. However it wasn’t Demon, it was his wolf father who has stalked the house a many of times, although by now those days have gone and thinned down some.
Once Peter has walked all of the way around the Civil War Quarters from back to front, the realization that maybe it was the same wolf that has been stalking them for quite some time has come to mind. Finally he walks back inside the house while taking a brief look behind along with the news of finding nothing.
The moment Peter walks inside Nicolaus asks wondering, “Find anything?”
Right away, Pater answers back with confusion on his mind as though maybe he were missing something, “No, whatever it was has come and gone I reckon!”
Just thereafter, a voice comes from the fort commander commenting, “Just forget about all of them darn wolf stories you’ve been conjuring up!”
Meanwhile the railroad construction manager Gus returns from searching and looking around through the many trees and areas that the Ute Indian Warriors may be hiding out at. So far he has spent a few hours riding around slowly only to find nothing. There were some places that he thought he had heard some noises, but when he investigated he found nothing.
Yet not too far away one of the Ute Indian Warriors had returned to the Ute Indian Fort and ditched his horse. So far the Ute Indian Informant has been following the railroad construction manager Gus for a while until he turned and rode back out of range. For a while there he happened to come pretty close to running in to the Ute Indian Fort, although the Ute Indian Warriors and their horses are pretty good at keeping quiet. And not to leave out the fact they know when someone is approaching as well.
Momentarily the railroad construction manager Gus takes another look around through the dark corners behind before turning back to leave the scene. On one hand he didn’t feel like wandering too far off at first, though he changed his mind later. As he leaves the scene the Ute Indian Informant watches and waits until he leaves. Once the railroad construction manager Gus leaves the area, the Ute Indian Informant turns back to the Ute Indian camp as his comrades wait quietly and patiently for his return.
Obviously the railroad construction manager Gus wasn’t any luckier than the Ogden Mountain Man who had missed the opportunity of running directly in to the Ute Indian Warriors fort by following him. It seems that both men have missed their luck at catching up to the Ute Indian Informant to follow him and see where the Ute Indian Fort is located at.
Of course, the Ute Indian Warriors want to preserve its whereabouts by keeping it as secret as they possibly can without letting anyone follow from behind catching them off guard. However this time things became a little too close for comfort to the Indians when the Ogden Mountain Man alone had tried to follow the Ute Indian Informant.
Yet the railroad construction manager Gus has made it more apparent with his pursuit than the Ogden Mountain Man. And in addition to that idea, the railroad construction manager seems a little more curious with finding where the Ogden Mountain Man had followed the Ute Indian Informant. To the railroad construction manager Gus it appears that the Ogden Mountain Man had given up such as he has and neither of them could find anything while looking for the Ute Indian Informant.
Nevertheless the railroad construction manager Gus heads back to the room they have in town at the hotel. As he returns, he can only think about how things would be better if they were camping in a tent closer to the camps around the Mound Fort Artillery Base which would make it easier to watch what’s going on around there. Right now, they are kind of afar off and they have to travel back a little ways north before setting their eye on the “Indian Fort” every day. So far they haven’t been noticed by anyone considering that they have been acting nonchalant except the railroad construction manager Gus and his escapade of following the Ute Indian Informant.
Meanwhile Demon has long left the Ute Indian Fort area that is hidden behind the nearby tree lines and has made his way back towards the Ogden River Canyon. At this time he has reached the mouth of the Ogden River Canyon and is about to cross the Ogden River making his way to sneak passed the Indian hot springs. So far he wants to stay out of sight so that he is able to return to Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s teepee unnoticed.
When Demon crosses the Ogden River, he begins to hear some voices coming from the Indian hot springs. Apparently the early morning isn’t too far away leaving Demon only a little time left to return to the Indian camp. After making away across the Ogden River, Demon stops and listens trying to distinguish who’s there from hearing them talk and laugh. He waits a few more moments before the voices stop after a few more words or so.
It doesn’t take long before he recognizes a few voices coming from the Indian band that had first found and discovered him. Quickly Demon decides to leave and head back to the Indian campsite before Eagle Feather Ute Indian wakes up and wonders where he’s been. Lately he has been keeping a close tab on him considering the peaceful union between the Mound Fort Artillery Base and the Ute and Shoshoni Indians.
Other than that Demon would otherwise feel like he should be hanging out with the Indian band, although some nights one or two of the Indians will sneak off alone and head out to the hot springs to soak. Nonetheless right now, he feels like acting like the revenge on his mother isn’t bothering him during the time being.
This way he will be able to save it for later and not to mention the fact that he notices something being conjured up by the Ute Indian Warriors who have been hiding out a lot lately. The last couple of months Demon recognized the fact that the Ute Indian Warriors have been making the rounds as though something were up. And not leave out the fact that Eagle Feather Ute Indian has been acting a bit strange since they have been gone for long amounts of time on a daily basis.
In fact, there are days where they only come back to the Indian campsite to pick up some more supplies and some food before heading out for another few days again. Sometimes Eagle Feather Ute Indian can only remain sitting in front of his teepee as they come to buy some things from him without saying too much. The Ute Indian Warriors try to pull it off like they have some honest earnings coming in regularly at times.
It seems that for some reason they have been setting their minds towards some goal along with waiting it out for the right moment to go against something. And that something which most likely would be the end to the peaceful union between the Ute Indian Tribe and the Mormon Settlers of the Mound Fort Artillery Base.
Soon Demon makes his way back to Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s teepee before his waking. As he strolls in to the front room he tries to do it as slowly as possibly without making any noises. Then he slowly and quietly lies down on his wolf mother’s skins as he finally lays his head down out past he front paws as though he had been sleeping the whole time.
Just about that time the sunrise begins to rise over the night sky making some blue skies as the morning comes. Demon tries to fall asleep as though he had been all night long while waiting for Eagle Feather Ute Indian to wake. A few minutes later Eagle Feather Ute Indian does wake up and then lifts off onto his feet and walks over to the other end of the teepee and approaches Demon saying, “Good Morning, it looks like the sun is about to rise for a new morning, huh Demon?”
Demon lifts his head and barks a loud bark that sounds like he’s anxious to be ready for another day within the Ute Indian camp. Even though Demon is very tired from leaving late last night, he feels okay to go through the early morning hours considering that he had slept for at least a few hours or so.
Right away, Eagle Feather Ute Indian sits outside of his trader teepee to watch the morning sun rise as he does every single morning of every year. To him this is a custom that he has inherited from his relatives and ancestors over the many of generations. Demon comes outside of the teepee and walks over right beside him as he sits there watching the skies lightened up little by little.
Then right away Eagle Feather Ute Indian starts to think about the Ute Indian Warriors considering that they haven’t been around very much. After a few more moments he begins to get a little upset while figuring that they are most definitely up to something. As he watches this morning’s sunrise, Eagle Feather Ute Indian can only think of how they are probably conjuring up some kind of devised plan against the Mound Fort and his wishes.
If he knows the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse, he will stop at nothing to win back over their ancestral burial grounds even if it means going behind everybody’s back. And that includes the fact that he will stop at nothing even if it means going against his Indian family’s back. He will also try to team up and join up with whoever he can in order to accomplish his goals.
At this time Demon sits and watches the sunrise along with him as Eagle Feather Ute Indian comments out loud as if he were one of their own saying, “I know those Warriors are up to no good and it’s going to hard to catch them hiding out and stalking that place.”
Right then Demon perks up as though he catches the drift of the beginning to some conversation as he grunts and licks his lips while listening. Moments later Eagle Feather Ute Indian continues to watch the sunrise while coming up with another line telling Demon, “Maybe, we can work a deal! You could go on some errands spying on them at night!”
After hearing these profound words which Demon seems to understand and comprehend that he’s saying to him, Demon lifts his head up and looks at Eagle Feather Ute Indian who is still glaring out at the early morning sunrise. And while he is still staring at the sun to take in the spirit of the morning, Eagle Feather Ute Indian says, “Of course, don’t let them see you following or watching them!”
Demon looks towards the morning sunrise as though he completely and utterly understands what he is trying to tell him in words that he can only pick up on to a point. Demon makes a loud sigh considering that he’s beginning to get hungry for something to eat. But there’s no doubt that it’s breakfast time and Demon never had a chance to do any hunting on his own considering the fact that he has been sort of hand fed most of the time.
Finally Eagle Feather Ute Indian gets the rest of his worries of his chest by informing Demon like he was the ticket to stopping the Ute Indian Warriors, “And when they get close to the fort commander’s house stay on them and then return back here!”
By now Demon is waiting for something to eat as Eagle Feather Ute Indian reaches for a bowl he has for Demon to fill it up with some dog food he had made himself out of some meats and beef jerkies for treats. Once the bowl is filled Eagle Feather Ute Indian lays it down and Demons eats through it like he was drinking water.
Immediately Eagle Feather Ute Indian becomes nervous and remarks, “Slow down now, you act like you haven’t eating anything in days!”
Just then some other Ute Indians enter the dancing circle in the middle of the Ute Indian camp. Immediately they all start dancing to the morning sunrise as the sun first peeks over the horizon in the distance. Eagle Feather Ute Indian looks and watches as Demon continues eating his early morning meal.
Then Demon stops and turns to watch while Eagle Feather Ute Indian quills to him, “Tonight will be your first night going to check up on those Indian Warriors to see what they are up to! I heard a rumor that they have a hidden Indian fort somewhere outside of the canyon and nobody seems to know where it’s at!”
At that moment Demon turns to him and gives Eagle Feather Ute Indian that look of the eye that means that he agrees to his abiding and understands him as well. By this time Eagle Feather Ute Indian realizes that he knows what he’s saying to him and hopefully he will be able to find some things out. In his mind if Demon follows with his plan then he can have some of his other curious tribal members follow Demon there when he’s more or less sure of where it’s located.
In some ways Eagle Feather Ute Indian has his own little war office that the Ute Indian Warriors don’t seem to know about, or they do and they are only forgetting the fact. However on the other hand even though the Bureau of Indian Affairs is now part of the war office since 1824, they haven’t helped administer the policies of their Native Affairs which happens to be the fact that Mound Fort is located on their ancestral burial grounds.
Soon Demon and Eagle Feather Ute Indian both turn to the sunrise which is beginning to get more and much fuller as the sun finally rises completely with lots of variations in color. As they watch Eagle Feather Ute Indian can only think of catching those Ute Indian Warriors in the act of going against his wishes.
But then in the back of him mind, Eagle Feather Ute Indian even has conflicting feelings which bring thoughts of going against the wishes of Jim Bridger which were probably forced on by the fort commander. And not to leave out the fact that President Young hasn’t helped out that much either with protecting the “Indian Fort.”
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
The next night Demon is sitting out front watching some of the Ute Indians dance around the ceremonial dancing arena while Eagle Feather Ute Indian cleans up the outside of the teepee area. In the distance Eagle Feather Ute Indian notices that the Indian band is coming towards his teepee which makes him think that they want to take Demon along with them for the evening. Quickly Eagle Feather Ute Indian signals to Demon by making a light whistling sound. Immediately Demon reacts and sneaks off from the opposite side of the teepee in the dark avoiding the Indian band completely.
Moments later Demon is making his way in to the nearby forest on his way with Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s plan of having him spy on the Ute Indian Warriors. Demon turns and watches as the Indian band approaches Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s teepee. When he stops and turns, Demon can hear Two Feathers Ute Indian asks, “Where’s Demon?”
Right away without any further hesitation or anything to hold him back so that the Indian band thinks that he’s making an excuse to cover up for some mischief on Demon’s part, Eagle Feather Ute Indian responds, “I don’t know, he was right here just a few minutes ago!”
Then Single Feather Ute Indian who comes up from behind Two Feathers Ute Indian thinks back to a few moments ago. She thinks back to a moment ago when she thought she had seen Demon scurry off in to the woods from behind Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s teepee. By then, Single Feather Ute Indian thinks that something is not exactly right commenting, “I thought I saw Demon just run off in to the woods a few seconds ago?”
After stopping and thinking about the fact for a few moments or so, Eagle Feather Ute Indian comes back with another line saying, “He was right here just a minute ago. Maybe, he just felt like taking a stroll around!”
It appears that Two Feathers Ute Indian finds that kind of odd that Demon would run off before they arrived at Eagle Feather Ute Indians teepee. Next Two Feathers Ute Indian glances around towards the outside perimeter of the Ute Indian campsite looking out at the nearby forest line leading in to the mountain ranges on the north side.
Thereafter Two Feathers Ute Indian turns back without seeing anything indicating where Demon might have gone off to. In fact, it seems that Demon must have run off as fast as a bolt of lightning. When she turns back to Eagle Feather Ute Indian she says, “I know he usually waits around for us?”
By now, Eagle Feather Ute Indian has some feelings to express about Demon telling the both of them, “Well, Demon is getting older and he is getting bigger. And he’s been acting a little different lately!”
At about that time Single Feather Ute Indian turns away thinking that Eagle Feather Ute Indian must have scared him off maybe. But then on the other hand she feels that maybe it’s something else. As she turns back from looking out in to the distance where he fled off to, Single Feather Ute Indian quills, “Maybe something scared him off or he had to go really bad!”
Next Eagle Feather Ute Indian thinks for a brief moment before telling them both, “Well, he’ll come back after a while!”
Finally Two Feathers Ute Indian figures that something isn’t right for some reason. It’s almost as though Demon was trying to avoid them as they approached Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s teepee. Obviously she feels that Demon may be acting funny or maybe he is getting to the age where he is curious to answers his calls of the wild that are luring him to nature. Nevertheless as Eagle Feather acts a little suspicious of Demon’s actions all of a sudden, Two feathers Ute Indian tries to change the subject by trying to leave and get out of there saying, “Let’s just go Single Feather and we’ll catch up to Demon later!”
Now Eagle Feather Ute Indian tries to act like he’s preoccupied with something else as Two Feather Ute Indian turns to leave with Single Feather Ute Indian following from behind. As they leave Eagle Feather Ute Indian tries to act nonchalant about the whole entire situation. Once Two Feathers Ute Indian and Single Feather Ute Indian walk away leaving, they both turn to look back as Eagle Feather Ute Indian acts like he’s heading inside while picking up his kerosene lamp to walk back inside his teepee.
When they reach the Indian trail leading to the other end of the Ogden River Canyon, Single Feather Ute Indian makes a comment remarking, “What do you make of that?”
Right away without even thinking about the fact too much, Two Feathers Ute Indian answers back diligently like, “I don’t know! It sounds like Demon was trying to avoid us for some reason or other!”
There’s a silence as they both walk along the Indian trail leading to the other end of the Ogden River Canyon. A few seconds later, Single Feather Ute Indian thinks about it while looking off back at the Indian camp and over at some of the Indian shelters along the way as they stretch further below them. Then she makes a statement telling her friend, “Sounds like they’re up to something and the Ute Indian Warriors haven’t been around that much either.”
By now Two Feathers Ute Indian has some things clicking in her mind about what might be going on out there and there just now starting to pick up on it just a little. It seems that not everybody is accepting the deals of peace from Eagle Feather Ute Indian and he knows what they are up to as far as pushing the Mormon settlers out of the Mound Fort area. Once a few more thoughts come to mind, Two Feathers Ute Indian brings forth her observances saying, “Maybe, that’s where Demon was heading off to!”
There’s no doubt that Single Feather Ute Indian is a little confused as to Two Feathers Ute Indian and her observations just a fraction of a bit asking back, “Heading off to where?”
While trying to just bring the conversation out in the open even more, Two Feathers Ute Indian tells her what she thinks saying, “Maybe, Demon is out tracking down the Ute Indian Warriors for Eagle Feather!”
After hearing her thoughts, Single Feather Ute Indian wonders what she’s talking about asking, “Tracking them to where?”
Then finally Two Feathers Ute Indian feels that for some reason or other she isn’t quite getting the point. Here Two Feathers Ute Indian continues with some details explaining, “Eagle Feather is having Demon find out where their hidden Indian fort is at!”
As they both reach their way further and further down the Indian trail towards the other end of the Ogden River Canyon, Single Feather Ute Indian asks another question, “What makes you think that?”
For a brief moment or so, Two Feathers Ute Indian takes another approach about the dilemma enlightening, “Because the Ute Indian Warriors haven’t been around for a while. I was trying to tell you that before and you weren’t paying attention.”
Now Single Feather Ute Indian expresses some other feelings elucidating, “I’m just upset because Demon was trying to avoid us and I couldn’t see why he would do such a thing!”
For some reason Two Feathers Ute Indian wants to clarify things a little bit more by exemplifying, “That’s because Demon is getting older and his wild side is coming out and now he will probably be gone most of the time looking for his wolf father.”
For a brief moment Single Feather Ute Indian looks back at her as they approach closer and closer towards the other end of the Ogden River Canyon. Then she turns back while canning, “And he will probably try and stop to look around the fort commander’s house trying to revenge his mother’s death I bet!”
Finally Two Feather’s Ute Indian starts to totally agree with what her sister is saying about Demon taking it on his own eventually to revenge his wolf mother’s death. She carries along with this conversation by communicating, “I think you’re right; it won’t be long before Demon makes his way back over to the Civil War Quarters on his own trying to mess with everyone around there and around the Mound Fort Artillery Base. There’s even a possibility that he may hurt someone and Eagle Feather’s plans of a peaceful union will all turn to wolf crap!”
At last, Single Feather Ute Indian wonders what they should do about this potential problem and that’s if they should do something even at all about it. On one hand there’s not too much that they can do about it considering that their Ute Indian Tribe doesn’t adhere to anything that they conjure up anyhow. With this fact in mind Single Feather Ute Indian asks, “So what should we do about it? Should we tell Eagle Feather or should we just forget about?”
At that moment in time, Two Feathers Ute Indian has an idea which seems to be the only idea in mind that goes along with her wanting to avoid talking to Eagle Feather Ute Indian considering he has gone behind their back in a way. Next as they begin to reach closer and closer to the other end of the Ogden River Canyon, Two Feathers Ute Indian mutters, “We will keep this to ourselves for now and sneak over to the Indian hideout and watch the house when Demon leaves on occasion. That’s what we will do!”
There’s no doubt in Single Feather Ute Indian’s mind that they will have to ditch everyone when the reach the hot springs and try to sneak off over to the Indian band’s hideout. And of course they have no idea where the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout is located at. In fact they will have to do some looking and searching around for it at the very least.
With this in mind, Single Feather Ute Indian has a question for her sister Two Feathers Ute Indian inquiring, “So when are we going to sneak off to the Indian hideaway?”
It’s a confusing thought while trying to think of a way to answer that question in mind. The thoughts of Two Feathers Ute Indian are that they ought to hang out for a while and then sneak off after everyone disperses and leaves if there’s anyone there even at all. With some keen sense at hand Two Feathers Ute Indian comes back with some plans saying privately in their conversation, “We will sneak off after everyone else leaves if there’s anyone there when we get there. Otherwise we could bring them all in on it!”
By now Single Feather Ute Indian doesn’t really seem to trust anybody anymore considering that they feel Eagle Feather Ute Indian is acting suspiciously about Demon and his apparent actions of leaving and ditching them both before they arrives at Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s trader teepee.
With this distrust in mind, Two Feathers Ute Indian answers back with a statement blatting, “No, let’s just handle it by our lonesome selves!”
While turning back to Demon who had previously taken off before Single Feather Ute Indian and Two Feather Ute Indian had made their way to Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s trader teepee. Currently Demon is trying to track the whereabouts of the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout which is giving him some difficulties. However he has had some training with the Indian band and some on his own with trying to track and hunt down his wolf father with no prevail, although he still hasn’t giving up the possibilities of any hope.
As he tries to find any tracings leading away from the Indian hideouts hidden behind the tree lines to the east of the Civil War Quarters, Demon becomes frustrated with so many scents messing up his distinguishing any particular Indian natives separately. Now he’s becoming confused as he looks to the fort commander’s house with no luck on pointing himself in any one direction.
Nevertheless he thinks back to when he was younger and the Ute Indian Warriors were all scoping and spying on the Civil War Quarters together. There are some memories that stick out in his mind as he watched the Ute Indian Warriors sneak off and disappear without notice. Many of times they would act like they were heading to the Indian camps outside of the Mound Fort Artillery Base.
However Demon with his keen senses of sight and sound could tell that they would change their course of direction at times while at other times they would just distract everyone within the Indian band enough to sneak away. With these memories coming forth, Demon decides to turn back away from the fort commander’s home while turning north east to try and see what he can come up with in that area.
At first, he tries to remember from his memories of the past where the Ute Indian Warriors would sneak and ride off towards. In his recollections of a time before the present, he remembers the Ute Indian Informant sneaking away first while the Ute Indian Scout and the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse would sneak off lastly trying to fade away from the scene of every night.
For a while there he feels helpless as though their Ute Indian Warrior hideout is somewhere undetectable by man, especially the Mormon and Utah settlers who have found this place as an abode to their new heritages. Anyhow Demon continues on looking for clues as to where the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout would or could possibly be located at.
A few hundred yards later, Demon finds some horse tracks that seems to scatter and disappear here and there thinning out at certain places and then returning back with more and more at many intervals throughout his searching. After sifting and looking them all through, Demon catches some senses of smells that remind and catch his interest as being the Ute Indian Warrior band.
It isn’t long before Demon begins to follow the light trails leading along to the Ute Indian Warriors hideaway. There are many tracks leading back and forth which start to confuse him as well as the horse tracks leading in and throughout the tree lines that sporadically surround the nearby area.
He continues on as he trails through some yardage looking past some thickened trees that stretch their way towards the northeast. There are some noises that distract him as he carries on with the tasks of the night, although he tries to ignore them the best that he possibly can without paying any more attention to them. Once he makes his way further away from the Civil War Quarters, Demon begins to hear some slight voices coming from nearby.
They are faint and he realizes that he’s on the right track while searching through the distance within the Utah forests that stretch up to the pine trees above. After heading in to some trees that are separated by some horse tracks, Demon can hear the voices again as they come out much more clearly. Moments later he stops and listens while recognizing the voices as being the Ute Indian Warriors who have been going against Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s wishes to make some peace out of everything.
It doesn’t take long before Demon tries to make his way closer without being heard. Of course, he realizes that their horses are very keen to any disturbances and from experience he tries to refrain from making any excessive noises. And once he gets close enough, he sees their camp with a dimmed campfire that is below the ground about a few feet. Now he can tell that they have taken a few lessons from the Civil War Quarters with the fire pit in the back of the fort commander’s house and he feels that he should just wait and watch.
For a minute or so, Demon watches and stakes out his claim on the Ute Indian Warriors like they were his prey of some kind. In a way he feels like they are part of his retribution when it comes to staging his revenge for the death of his wolf mother that he now misses so dearly. For now the Ute Indian Warriors are just sitting around looking at the camp fire that they have dug in below the ground.
Demon continues on watching without getting too close to startle their horses or themselves as they sit around as though they were thinking what to do with their time. It’s almost as though they are waiting for the right moment or perhaps they aren’t as prepared as they thought they should have been by now.
Nevertheless Demon persists with his stalking as many minutes turn in to more minutes before he hears the Ute Indian Informant ring out a voice before the night rolls further asking, “So when are the Shoshoni Indian Warriors supposed to come to our aid?”
Straight forth the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse shrills out immediately, “They should have been here by now, I don’t know what’s taking them so long!”
Right away, the Ute Indian Scout swings his knife around his right hand and then rubs his left index finger on the blade feeling just how sharp his weapon is before schilling out, “They’re screwing around with us I bet! They should have been here by now!”
By this time Demon has snuck his way a little closer towards the opposite end of here their horses are tied up to some trees that the Ute Indian Warriors have propped up as posts for the occasion. Once Demon gets in a little closer he drops low behind some foliage and bushes that are a many yards away. And not to leave out the fact that his darkened body which naturally camouflages itself within the darkness surrounding the Ute Indian Warrior hideout.
Now the Ute Indian Warriors begin to become restless as they wait for their Shoshoni friends to show up from down as far as Wolf Mountain which is located Far East of Salt Lake City. Of course, they have many areas in which they stay and live, although they have a few stops to make along the way and that’s what’s holding them up from arriving any sooner.
Meanwhile while all of these roaming thoughts flow through the Ute Indian Warriors minds as they sit and wait for their Shoshoni Indian Warriors, Demon thinks that maybe he ought to turn and head towards the Civil War Quarters to see what’s going on there so he has the chance to sum up the entire scene at hand. And he hasn’t forgot how the Ute Indian Warriors and the Ute Indian band has neglected taking him around the Mound Fort Artillery Base, although he has watched the fort commander and his soldiers living at the Civil War Quarters always head up the hill on a daily basis.
Nevertheless he decides to stay for a few moments until he has the chance to turn around and sneak off to do some more sightseeing that he hasn’t had a chance to as of yet. Momentarily the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse stands up and walks around the outside of the camp fire while thinking about things for a few moments. Demon notices his shadow piercing about the trees as it stretches its way above him.
A few images come to mind as the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse’s shadow starts to form in to other pictures that relate to the future maybe. However in his mind the Ute Indian Warrior’s actions are reminding him of what’s at stake as even images of his wolf father emerge in the brightened flickers of the fire light on the background of the trees around the camp sight.
Moments later the Ute Indian Informant stands up which makes a shadow on the opposite end of the camp fire shining the other way resembling his wolf mother in form which freaks him out a bit. Quickly Demon changes his decision to back up and move away from the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideaway so that he can take off and head to the Mound Fort Civil War Quarters.
As Demon leaves the scene of the Ute Indian Warrior hideout, he hears the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse say to the others with lots of confidence, “When they arrive, hopefully they come the long way around so that nobody sees them coming. I told them to avoid passing our Indian camp and to stay away from the town of Ogden as well!”
While the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse says these things, Demon turns around for a last look and then he turns back away again in order to leave the area. Slowly Demon leaves trying not to disturb them or their horse by making any sounds by mistake. When he does make his way out of there, Demon begins to pick up the pace while looking back again to make sure that nobody saw him and that he can come back again with no problems at all whatsoever.
In his mind there he will have no trouble finding the Ute Indian Warrior hideaway again considering that it wasn’t easy to find, although the task and deed wasn’t impossible to find and locate either. However regardless he feels that he will have to at least come back and take another stop to check up on the situation before heading back up the Ogden River Canyon to the Ute Indian camp to inform Eagle Feather Ute Indian about his findings.
Still he keeps the thoughts in his head of remembering where he has gone to find this secret hideout while looking at the scenic surroundings around him. Even though most of it is mostly trees and dry washes leading from the Wasatch Mountain ranges. For a moment there he stops to take a look back before getting too far away. Just then he decides to head over to a nearby tree that he wants to remain familiar while lifting up his hind legs and marking the spot by going to the bathroom there.
Afterwards he walks away a few steps and kicks some dirt over the spot to make his mark covered up from the Ute Indian Warriors, though he will be able to sense where he’s been just in case he were to forget. Moments later after he finishes up completely, Demon leaves and heads over towards the Civil War Quarters to make his presence known by all for the second time on his own. Yet he hopes to run in to some Mound Fort soldiers or settlers to make a good first impression on them.
Now he very certain that he will remember his way back to the Ute Indian Warrior hideaway and that he can retrace his steps back there any time he deems necessary. While on the way, Demon thinks about his wolf mother and the images from the shadows coming from the Ute Indian Warriors standing by the fire burning down below. Many thoughts are surfacing as he gets the impression that they are spiritually connected in some sense.
When he reaches the Civil War Quarters, Demon notices as always that it is all so quiet especially these days with the peaceful trade union between the Ute Indians and the Mound Fort complex that he figures he may have to wait until the morning comes. In this case that means that he won’t be able to return to the Ute Indian camp until after the morning sunrise, although this time around he is on a mission to perform a specific task.
Once he does arrive at the Civil War Quarters he realizes that their horses are nowhere in sight and that they may be in the Mound Fort Artillery Base anyhow just in case something were to happen with some more Indian attacks and skirmishes. And for some reason he decides to investigate further by taking a first look around the Mound Fort Artillery Base to get to know the layout front and back within his mind so that he can make the necessary assessment of the situation before doing anything out of the ordinary.
Finally Demon leaves and heads around to the front of the fort commander’s house which points directly to the north side with the front door facing Ben Lomond Peak. As he makes his way from out of the tree lines to the east side of the establishment, he keeps a little distance from there while running by towards the hill of the Ute Indian’s ancestral burial grounds. While Demon passes the front of the house he looks ahead to the south looking to notice anything out of the ordinary, although the area is covered with many thickened trees leading to the top of the hill.
The Mound Fort Artillery Base appears to be sort of hidden from view a little bit even though he kind of caught a glimpse back in the day when he made his rounds with the Ute Indian band here and there. Anyways Demon carries on looking for any stragglers who he may run in to along the way without any warning and he seems to be looking out for the best path of travel on his journey in to the unknown.
As he gets further away from the fort commander’s Civil War Quarters, Demon turns south and heads up the steep hill that descends at or about where 9th Street and Grant Avenue are located. For a moment he stops as he hears many sounds coming from the top of the hill behind the tree lines that hide the Mound Fort Artillery Base from his view.
He glances in to the distance at the top of the hill before making the decision to go ahead and make his way closer. Suddenly there are some noises coming from the very top of the hill that catch his attention. Quickly Demon makes his way towards the Mound Fort Artillery Base as fast as he can without trying to make any sudden noises. Then before reaching the top of the hill, Demon can hear some footsteps walking in and through the nearby trees.
Immediately Demon stops and looks around only noticing the high maddened walls of the “Indian Fort” that appear to make their way around on both sides to him. Momentarily he looks around after hearing some more footsteps coming from a tent just outside the Mound Fort Artillery Base. Then when he stops he sees some people walking around the outside of the tent who seem to have no awareness to his presence. Nevertheless Demon turns and continues on as though he was abiding for a later time after first exploring.
As he moves ahead away from the nearby tent of what seems to be some Indian stragglers or Mormon settlers perhaps, Demon stops before making his way any further before hearing a voice come from nearby within some nearby trees. The voice is very light and faint and it has no recollection whatsoever to him as though the words were coming from a complete stranger.
Still he looks to see wherever the voice seems to be coming from and he sees nobody except a dark figure move in and between the nearby trees. At the moment everything seems confusing as he glances around the unknown area that is completely new to him. And he realizes that he has never been her before in the past
Then as he takes a few more steps forward towards the high maddened wall surrounding the Mound Fort Artillery Base, Demon hears a voice saying very lightly to him, “The wolf has come to avenge his mother’s death!”
Immediately Demon looks and sees the darkness of the figure move towards the light of the waxing moon a bit as his lunatic tendencies come forth. However only the slight view of part of a woman’s face is seen by him even though his ever the voice seems to be coming from and he sees nobody except a dark figure move in and between the nearby trees.
Then as he takes a few more steps forward towards the high maddened wall surrounding the Mound Fort Artillery Base, Demon hears a voice saying very lightly to him, “The wolf has come to avenge his mother’s death!”
Immediately Demon looks and sees the darkness of the figure move towards the light of the waxing moon a bit as his lunatic tendencies come forth, although only the slight view of part of a woman’s face is seen by him even though his eyes are keen enough in the blackened darkness. And regardless of what he sees, meaning whether the dark figure was to be a man or a woman, Demon is more conscious as to whether it is an Indian or a Mormon Pioneer settler. But for some reason Demon reacts rather slowly by letting out a light growl which he holds for a moment.
With a sort of frightened feeling while expecting to be able to mesmerize the retched beast demon wolf, the Broome female family member makes a comment saying, “How dare you growl at me like that!”
Then straight off, Demon and his growling becomes a little more vicious as he feels like she is more his enemy now by raising the tone of her voice. In fact, he continues staring her down and growling as she tries to take few steps back between the trees towards where she came from. As she steps back, Demon takes a few steps ahead for about a few feet or maybe about a yard or so before stopping only to let her know that he means business.
It only takes a moment about or so before she fades back behind one of the trees there and Demon begins to turn around to head the other way closer to the high maddened walls of the Mound Fort Artillery Base. At about that moment there are some noises that sound like there are others who are coming from hearing his growling or maybe the woman told some other friends or relatives.
Nonetheless Demon feels that maybe it is his call to move along and just simply scope out and investigate the surrounding area for the very first time. Of course, in his mind now, he ought to leave the scene without creating any more troubles by freaking out on anyone. Quickly as two other Mormon settlers or maybe Utah settlers come approaching him fast like with something in their hands, Demon heads off and makes his way closer to the high maddened wall that surrounds the Mound Fort Artillery Base from one end to the other.
Furthermore with many details coming in to play that are unknown to him as far as realizing what’s there are concerned are only shallow and on the subsurface. For one, he has no idea as to what a Garrison would be as far as any cannons protecting the fort on either ends, although he does feels like he’s being watched even though it’s from a great distance perhaps.
Still he leaves the thickened tree line that thins out closer to the high maddened walls, though there are many trees dispersed here and there. Then all of a sudden he is able to see some more tents that happened to be set up towards the opposite end of the Mound Fort Artillery Base. As he looks he notices some other people sitting around and standing around during the late evening which causes him to turn his way back down towards the Civil War Quarters.
However Demon doesn’t head all of the way down the hill towards the Civil War Quarters. For some reason he just heads away from any view of the tents that are scattered throughout in little small like camps all around the Mound Fort Artillery Base. Yet there are some trees that are thickened enough for him to hide in. And just before he moves beneath some trees down the hill a ways, the aimed peep shot sights of a Mormon pioneer takes the pointed rifle away as Demon passes out from view.
The moment Demon makes a clearing, the Mormon pioneer says out loud with his rifle pointing downward as he turns away while up on the viewing ramp. For a few many moments there he was watching Demon the entire time as he was about to begin an outrage causing trouble. Nevertheless he feels that all is well with shooting a wolf that isn’t full grown as of yet anyhow.
Next the Mormon pioneer leaves and heads down the viewing ramp to do some other tasks other than watch out for the Mound Fort Artillery Base. Of course, there are others watching out just as well considering that they even have a cannon ramp and many cannons within their arsenal of weaponry down in the artillery rooms inside the brick walls of the building.
Once out of sight even though Demon has no idea the eyes of the Indian fort are on him or were on him. But now Demon is in the clear as all attention has moved away from him for the time being. Soon Demon starts to feel that maybe he ought to wait before getting too close the Mound Fort Artillery Base. For now he notices that there are lots of people camped all of the way round. There are some people camping here and there are some people camping there.
Most of them seem to be Mormon pioneers or Utah pioneers that are poor and have built up little camp shacks within the tree lines surrounding the area. On the north side it seems like there are some white settlers mixed in with some Ute Indians camping throughout here and there, while on the south side he notices some Ute Indians that seem like they are just straggling around for food, water, clothing, and a place for shelter in exchange for the little bits of meager work that they can do within the small community.
As Demon stops away from everything and everyone the best that he can for the time being, he then decides to stay on the outskirts a little. At that moment, Demon fades back closer towards the Civil War Quarters to reassess the situation closer to home, meaning the home of the fort commander that he wants to invade.
Finally as Demon makes his back closer to the fort commander’s home, he starts to head south a little further near the bottom of the hill on the other side. And when he does the actions of his are caught by a glimpse of someone else watching the Civil War Quarters as well. However he is only seen making his way as the railroad construction manager Gus who remains out on the prowl for another late night of watching the scenes unfold.
As the railroad construction manager Gus watches, he sees Demon cross over just in front of him from the east side of the fort commander’s home. At the time being, the railroad construction manager Gus is a good ways a way, although he is also a good ways away from the Ogden River which is directly behind him a good quarter of a mile or so.
Conversely with his binoculars even at night the railroad construction manager can still see some details with just the moonlighting alone. Yet there are times when everything seems to go totally dark like when some clouds pass over in the way blocking any moonlight or even any fire lights that are too far away. Still he tries to stay within a close proximity to see what kinds of activities have been in progress there.
Soon Demon crosses out of his sights as he makes his way towards the southeast side of the Mound Fort Artillery Base. The railroad construction manager Gus looks as a many of trees block his views while thinking about what he sees. So far it all appears to be out of the ordinary that the wolf has his mind set on scoping out such a place like that up the hill.
Then maybe his mind is playing tricks on him and the wolf is only out on the prowl. And regardless, the Union Pacific Railroad Workers have no idea of what has happened in the past as far as a peaceful trade relations or any history on the wolf and his past with his mother being killed.
So far it looks as though just some ordinary everyday wolf is making the passer by while trying to make a desperate hunt for another day out on the basins and ranges of North Ogden. Nevertheless it seems as though there are many things coming towards the Mound Fort Artillery Base. And it seems that a many of those things are beyond the Union Pacific Railroad’s comprehension considered that it’s part of nature’s revenge scheme or maybe its Mother Nature’s powers at work. However in due time things will shift to the fort commander and his Civil War Quarters which is all on the verge of being threatened with its everyday existence.
CHAPTER NINETEEN
Meanwhile Demon continues on the prowl checking out the Mound Fort Artillery Base from a far distance considering the near misses of coming in to direct contact with some of the outside inhabitants of the area. Now he feels that he should take a step back before getting too close in his proximity to the place. In fact, Demon stays a good distance away while trying to get to know the place and layout a little better before making another assessment of the situation.
By this time he is out of the railroad construction manager Gus’s sights as he veers in and through the nearby trees surrounding the whole entire area. There are some small farms and plantations around the lower valleys of the hill, but many of them are smaller while most of the larger plantations are a little further away.
For the time being Demon stops and looks around while looking back at the scenic views that are all around him in every direction. As he pans looking around he notices the railroad construction manager Gus hiding out a ways from the Civil War Quarters watching as though he were waiting for something to happen or maybe for something out of the ordinary. Moments later Demon decides to make his way around to get to know the place a little better.
He feels that whoever had seen him before when he was on the opposite side of the Mound Fort Artillery Base is most likely preoccupied with some other task or maybe they have completely forgotten about him already. He has learned a lot from hanging out with the Ute Indians especially when it comes to watching how they act like dilettantes in the way that they change their interests from one thing to the other.
Of course by now, he has also learned how to understand their Ute Indian languages when they happen to use it, although it seems that most everyone speaks in an English tongue considering that English is the primary language around the area and it’s the chosen language of the country such as the United States anyhow.
And he has learned a few commands as well along the way while living with the Ute Indians up the Ogden River Canyon. Many of those commands are basic such as sitting and lying down while others are a little more about making him the perfect hunting partner too. But while thinking about these things in his mind, Demon takes a long run around back to the north side of the Mound Fort Artillery Base. He does this while checking out all of the tents and canopy like settings that are filled with many Ute Indians who are working around the place earning their food and shelter.
As he makes his way back towards where he first started from, Demon stray a way a little further as though he wants to avoid any more confrontations. One reason is that he doesn’t want to run in to that lady and her friends again while they are all together. However Demon wouldn’t mind keeping an eye out for her just in case he catches her alone, although he is more prone to attacking men especially any mountain men.
This time he feels that he will simply let it go and try to forget about it almost like it had never happened. But then on the other hand he feels like he better come up with another technique with finding the Mountain Man Jim Bridger who had changed his life all for the worst. Yet within his understanding and instinct he sensed that Jim Bridger was on his way to somewhere else when he saw him leave for the last time.
Nevertheless as he trails by the surrounding tree lines that in lay the north side of the hill, Demon takes some last glances while realizing his return will be soon enough to take another tour of the place. Nonetheless he now turns his attentions back to the fort commander and his Civil War Quarters in which he has taken quite a break from stalking.
When he does reach the front of the fort commander’s Civil War Quarters, Demon comes up with a sort of prank that he has schemed up on his own inklings. He has an idea in which will give him a kind of laugh to always remember and cherish. In fact, this will be his code of survival within a prankish way that he will gain even more power over the entire place if not the whole settlement.
Quickly as he approaches, Demon makes his way to the front porch leading up to the front door that faces Ben Lomond Peak. Right away, Demon walks up the steps and decides to do his thing which is what happens when a wolf’s nature calls and says it’s time to go. Next once he is finished and has laid his mark on his territory so to speak, Demon turns his rear to the front door while kicking the door with his hind legs as though he were knocking on the door to see if someone is home. Then after a few hard kicking knocks, Demon decides to leave and sprint towards the nearby tree lines to the Ute Indian band’s hideout.
And before he makes his way there to the hideaway, Nicolaus has woken up to see who the hell would be knocking on the door this early in the morning. Of course, at first he looks out the front window which looks out towards the porch, although when he does he doesn’t quite seem to see anything or anybody. And not to leave out the fact that he can’t really see too good considering there’s no light to see with anyways.
Moments later, Demon has turned around behind the camouflaged spot from the trees and bushes and watches as he seems to notice nothing right off the bat or knock at the door. Nevertheless Demon watches and waits for his prank to unfold even though it seems to be lagging a bit.
By now Peter wonders what and who is at the door asking Nicolaus, “Who’s there?”
Nicolaus leave the window and reaches for a kerosene lamp that they have in the room at a low setting. Once he takes the kerosene lamp he turns it up a little so that he has some sort of vision around the room while walking slowly to the front door answering back promptly, “I don’t know, I don’t see anybody out there!”
Moments later, the fort commander comes in the front room asking, “What’s the commotion?”
Immediately Nicolaus informs the fort commander, “There was a knock at the front door a minute or so ago!”
For a brief moment the fort commander says, “Hold on, let me get the rifle!”
The fort commander grabs his .22 caliber long rifle and then stands at the birch wood arches in the front small hallway while saying, “Now just open the door slowly and stand back behind the door while being ready to close again!”
Just then Nicolaus gets ready to open the door but first he says, “Don’t shoot me!”
Then Nicolaus opens the door slowly and after the door cracks open they all realize that there’s no one there on the front porch. In fact they can’t even hear anything for that matter either. Finally the fort commander thinks that it’s probably some Ute Indian kid prank saying, “It’s probably some Ute Indian kids playing pranks on us in the middle of the night!”
Right then Nicolaus looks down while pointing the light coming from the lantern outside towards the porch while noticing something on the porch. Once he realizes what it is he says, “Hey look, someone went on the porch!”
The fort commander gets unnerved thinking that the Ute Indian kids went to the bathroom on his porch saying, “Them damn Indian kids! “
Finally, Peter who wants to sleep and brush the whole thing off now says, “We’ll get it in the morning.
The fort commander leaves the room and closes the hallway door in between the front room and the living room. Then Nicolaus thinks about what has just happened. He does this while trying to fall back asleep saying, “I can’t believe those Indian brats would do such a thing!”
By now Peter is already trying to fall asleep, though before he actually does start to fall asleep even the least bit, he drills out, “Well, so much for the peaceful offering from them!”
As they both begin to fall asleep thinking about the whole ordeal that was such a surprise at that time at night, Nicolaus adds his feelings gibbering, “Let’s just act as though it doesn’t bother us and we’ll take care of it in the morning. Maybe we ought to have a look around to see where they are hiding out at?”
During the meanwhile, Demon is still there watching considering he watched every second unfold despite the fact that he didn’t quite get the response he wanted. It seems that in his mind he wanted them to step in to some bad luck for that matter. But then all is well because he still got his laughs which tend to make him feel a little bit better. Yet it is going to take much more than that to cure his behavior and wellness completely.
All the same Demon figures that they are just pretending that it didn’t bother them and maybe they will just simply take care of it later. And for that matter he decides to leave and make his way back to the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout to catch back up with keeping tabs up with them all. But he decides to leave; he looks to take another glance back at the Civil War Quarters as a reminder of his return which will most likely be very soon enough.
And as he heads out making his way back towards the Ute Indian Warrior hideout, Demon can only think of how he hopes and thinks this may become a regular routing in his nightly adventures. Then nevertheless that’s if he would even want to call it that when in actuality it’s all for his sweet revenge of his loss of his wolf mother.
While running back, Demon immediately feels that this time he better stay and watch them for a good few hours. Especially since there’s barely a few hours before sunrise comes. On the other hand he feels like he should be back before Eagle Feather Ute Indian wakes up to see the new morning sunrise like he does every single morning. Yet he even feels that he could stay watching the Ute Indian Warriors for some time throughout the day, but it would be harder for him to hide out from being seen by them all.
And just before he gets closer and closer he begins to hear their voices talk very loud over the distance like they were refreshed with a tougher energy now for some reason. However as he gets nearer, Demon hears what appears to be some new voices that he has never heard before. The closer it gets, the louder the voices get and the more it sounds like there are many conversing about something or other.
Soon Demon can see the light from the camp fire which is settled down below the surface of the ground like that in the back of the Civil War Quarters down the hill from the Mound Fort Artillery Base. Eventually he finds himself back close to the spot where he was hiding before, although he had to set back another twenty feet or so from the spot he was when he last left.
It seems there are too many Indians now and many of them Demon has never seen before. They must have arrived since Demon had left to go check up on the fort commander’s place to keep up the tabs on the place. Furthermore Demon stays as far away from their horse without being seen and right now that’s going to be pretty hard considering he has come back to a scene that is much more than he possibly can bargain for anyhow.
Now there are many more horses than before that are kind of a little antsy by moving around as much as they can within their restrained bridles which are all tied down to trees here and there. Nevertheless Demon tries to zero in on what’s going on while staying back as far as he can without being noticed. And if he does get noticed it’s not like the Ute Indian Warriors don’t know who he is even though he’s just some stray wolf and not some other Indian.
But now there are more than just the Ute Indian Warriors that he does know at first glance. There are also some Shoshoni Indian Warriors there as well to team up with the local Ute Indian Warriors from up the Ogden River Canyon to abide in taking back their ancestral lands from the Mormon pioneers.
About this time, the two Indian sisters Single Feather Ute Indian and Two Feathers Ute Indian have reached the Indian bands hideout behind the tree lines next to the Civil War Quarters. And so far as they are concerned they haven’t come across Demon as of yet. Meanwhile they decide to stay and wait the time out until they feel enough time has gone by before they both should start looking for the Ute Indian Warrior Hideaway location. But moreover they still have no idea about where to start looking, although they have an idea as to what direction to probably start off with looking for it.
Anyhow back with the wolf, Demon continues watching from a nearby spot behind some trees, he hears the head Shoshoni Indian Warrior say, “It took us a while to get here because we had to go around the long way. We even passed up the Huntsville Fort by a few miles on our way here!”
Then right away the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse thinks about what he said as though it were something of a matter as he mentions, “We’re not too concerned with the Huntsville Fort!”
The Shoshoni Indian Tracker comes back with some feelings of his own telling him, “No, but you will still have to worry about them bringing reinforcements when the real taking back of the Mound Fort comes forth!”
For now Demon continues on watching while the Ute and Shoshoni Indian Warriors all seem to blend in together as though it was yesterday since they have had any reunions. So far it has been a while since they have come together for any reasons or so to take care of their personal Indian affairs.
Then finally the Shoshoni Indian Informant is curious as to when they are all going to take a look around the area so they can all plan their strategies asking, “So when are we going to take a tour of the Mound Fort on foot so nobody sees us around?”
Now the head Shoshoni Indian Warrior decides that it’s time to get the point of the matter of how they all want to remain anonymous until the time comes bickering, “We have to stay out of sight until the time is right for us to take down the place!”
Of course, the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse has some famous words of his own to add affirming, “You all can make your appearance when we make our final stand!”
By this time, Demon is smart and trained enough even on his own to comprehend the fact that something is up between these Ute and Shoshoni Indian Warriors all hanging out together. And in his mind it isn’t for the better obviously either, but then he also has some sweet revenge of his own which contradicts with his wanting to go tell Eagle Feather Ute Indian right away. So for this reason even though the night seems to be coming to an end as he senses the new morning getting closer, Demon decides to stay and watch them all for another little while.
Many of the Shoshoni Indian Warriors who have come think of themselves as more or less like renegades as they join the fight with the Ute Indian Warriors. Demon watches as they all seem to prepare while getting the many supplies ready that they have gathered over the last several of months or more.
Most of them converse back and forth which each other while the Ute Indian Warriors seemed outnumbered considering that most of the Ute Indian bands have gone along with Eagle Feather Ute Indian and his deal with keeping the peace with the Mound Fort Artillery Base. Then on the other hand there’s a few of them that don’t agree with the idea at all and are willing to do anything to oppose such a notion.
However the Ute Indian Warriors now that it won’t take too much to get some of the other Ute Indians within the tribe to join them especially with the Shoshoni Warriors there now. Nevertheless the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse keeps up the conversations as Demon listens trying to make an understanding out of it all. So far the only things he can seem to make out are their gestures along with the hand movements with certain notions.
Next the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse makes a comment that Demon tries to pierce down on saying, “It’s too late to do any scouting around now! It would be better if we wait another night and start a little early!”
Then the Shoshoni Indian Scout has a final token of his esteem saying, “I guess we could wait it out another night before we scout us some local pioneer women!”
By now, the Ute Indian Scout becomes a little on the edgy side coming back with, “Now don’t get any ideas; we are going to keep our minds on getting our heritage back before we think about any women!”
One of the Shoshoni Indian Renegades is in the best of judgment to stick up for the other Shoshoni Indian Scout balking, “Hey, there’s nothing wrong with having a little fun while we’re all out here!”
Finally the last part of the conversation before Demon decides to leave and head back up the Ogden River Canyon to go back to the Ute Indian campsite comes as he turns away. At that moment the Ute Indian Warrior Mean Horse declares out loud, “Don’t worry; we’ll all have our fun soon!”
As Demon leaves some of the horses start to get excited about something making some sighs and giddy like moans for a few moments. Nonetheless Demon continues on while hearing some of the Ute and Shoshoni Indians yell out while trying to quiet them down a bit. However it seems as though they will only cry and yell out so loud trying to keep their whereabouts and hideaway unheard of and unknown about for the time being at least.
Soon Demon leaves and begins to ascend his way back towards the Ogden River Canyon while staying out of sight and thinking about everything he has seen. After a few minutes of traveling a good distance, Demon turns back to check to make sure he will have no problems with finding his way back to the Ute and Shoshoni Indian hideout.
It isn’t too much longer before Demon makes his way to the mouth of the Ogden River Canyon to cross over just northeast of the Indian hot springs. While he crosses over to the other side of the Ogden River, Demon looks to see if there’s anyone down there. After seeing and hearing nothing, Demon leaves and makes his way towards the other end of the Ogden River Canyon.
However he decides to travel along the Ogden River valley while trying to stay away from the Indian trail that stretches the entire distance. This will save him time considering the Indian trails winds and meanders around and stretches far above the valley in many places. Still Demon has some areas where he can cross over the Ogden River from time to time considering how it weaves from one side of the canyon to the other from one end of the canyon to the other.
By this time Single Feather Ute Indian and Two Feathers Ute Indian have searched all they can before the new morning gets closer and closer. Now they feel like waiting another night before resuming with their search. Obviously for some reason they feel that the Ute Indian Warriors could be anywhere. And it is possible that they are pretty far away to stay a good distance from the Mound Fort Civil War Quarters as possible. Nevertheless this makes them decide to give up for now and return later as they turn to head back for the Ogden River Canyon only after a while of searching.
Eventually he reaches the other side of the Ogden River Canyon towards the upper valley at the eastern end. And before he reaches the tents and shacks of the Indian campsite Demon notices the morning sun start to peak its way across the eastern horizons. Swiftly he makes his way over to Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s teepee, only to find him outside already waiting to watch the new morning appear as he does every single morning.
When Demon approaches, Eagle Feather Ute Indian doesn’t turn away from the morning sunrise to take a look at him. For a few moments Demon tries to catch his breath from running non-stop while trying to make it there in time before the sun first peaks out above the horizon. Then a few seconds later after Demon seems to have caught his breath back, Eagle Feather Ute Indian makes a comment to Demon shrieking, “It’s another lovely sunrise today!”
Right then, Demon looks out towards the eastern skies to see the bright red and orange rays of the sun drift under some nearby clouds. Then Demon makes a light bark as though he understood what Eagle Feather Ute Indian was saying to him about the morning sunrise or maybe Demon is only barking to let him know that he has found the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout. But low and behold Eagle Feather Ute Indian doesn’t seem to know the all of the facts considering that the Shoshoni Indian Warriors and many Shoshoni Renegades are there as well.
Nevertheless Eagle Feather Ute Indian decides to try and talk to Demon, though he feels like feeding him first. Yet, he hesitates from getting off of his little barrel seat that he sometimes sits on out front of his trader teepee for another few moments while watching the last few more seconds of the Morning sunrise.
Next Eagle Feather Ute Indian gets up and reaches for some beef jerky that he has especially saved up for Demon once he had returned back from his errand. Quickly Demon takes part in eating the beef jerky as fast as he possibly can like it was going out of style. But of course beef jerky will never go out of style around Eagle Feather Ute Indian who makes it as often as he can when the hunting seasons are good.
Next Eagle Feather Ute Indian sits down again back in his spot and goes back to looking at the morning sun which has finally peaked its way above the eastern horizons. Now he wants to try and find out what Demon has found out while out on the basins and ranges trying to find the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout.
For some reason he finds it a little hard to try and ask him considering he has trained Demon all he could over the duration of time they have been around together. Nevertheless he waits until Demon gets a morning meal before interrogating him somehow about the previous night. Soon Eagle Feather Ute Indian starts to become anxious to know where the Ute Indian Warriors have been hiding out from the Ute Indian campsite with their rebellion of his peaceful offering.
Then Eagle Feather Ute Indian turns to Demon and asks him a question hoping that he will understand and comprehend what he’s asking interrogating, “So did you find the Ute Indian Warriors?
Right away Demon finishes licking his chops while he swallows his last few chews of the beef jerky. Immediately Demon looks to Eagle Feather Ute Indian and nods his head as though he were saying “yes” to his question. That is one of the training lessons that Eagle Feather Ute Indian has taught him through feeding and other tasks that have to do with everyday life.
At that moment when Eagle Feather Ute Indian realizes that he did well for the first night’s work at finding them all. However Eagle Feather Ute Indian doesn’t know that the Shoshoni Indian Warriors are there with the Ute Indian Warriors at this time and that it doesn’t look good to Demon. With these facts starting to form in Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s mind, he inquires, “How many were there? Draw a line for each of them in the dirt over here!”
Without any further hesitation, Demon takes a step towards a clearing where many of his other counting marks have been brushed over and away. Subsequently Demon starts to draw a line with his right front paw. Then he draws another, another, and another. And just when Eagle Feather Ute Indian thinks that he has covered the small rebellious Ute Indian Warrior band, Demon continues on drawing more lines followed by more lines and more lines getting him sort of confused in a way at the very least.
Afterwards Eagle Feather Ute Indian decides to go further with his questions to Demon about the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideaway asking, “There were that many?”
Straightaway Demon answers his question the best he can by understanding the words of Eagle Feather Ute Indian and shaking his head up and down trying to say “yes” to his question once again. Directly thereafter, Eagle Feather Ute Indian wonders if the Ute Indian Warriors have hooked back up with the Shoshoni Indian Warriors behind some of the Indian bands back in order to try and per sway the Indian band against his best wishes for the place.
Finally Eagle Feather Ute Indian asks Demon if there were others there with them probing, “There were others there with the Ute Indian Warriors at their little hideout?”
And once again Demon does the right thing by nodding his head up and down again as though he was saying “yes” and like he knows exactly what Eagle Feather Ute Indian is wondering about them and their teaming up behind his back. By now, Eagle Feather Ute Indian starts to become curious as to where their hideout is located at even though he realizes that it must not be too far away from the Civil War Quarters, although he feels that their hideout wouldn’t be too close either.
With only a few miles of distance away in his mind, Eagle Feather Ute Indian chooses another question to ask Demon. And it’s one that he’s aware of understanding for certain with all of the days of his hunting experiences questioning, “Where is their hideout; in which direction?”
Surely Demon comprehends the question and answers promptly by turning towards the far western end of the Ogden River Canyon, though he looks sort of through the canyon walls as well indicating that their hideout is somewhere northwest of them. However their hideaway is more to the west than to the north of where they are currently located.
Moments later Demon lifts up his right front paw and points his paw in that direction telling Eagle Feather Ute Indian that their hideout isn’t really too far away from the Civil War Quarters, although it is a few good miles away closer to the west side of the mountains which are a part of the north end of the Ogden River Canyon.
When Demon points his paw out in the direction of the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout, he looks as though he were conjuring up hell in their abiding. Furthermore it seems and appears that Demon does sort of have an instinctive demonic side to him after all. Especially with his eyes that have become blooded red in color from his growing angers that have built up over the many of months that have turned into nearly a few years after a few more months come to pass.
At this time Eagle Feather Ute Indian starts to think and ponder the thoughts over knowing that they are going to hit the Civil War Quarters and the Mound Fort Artillery Base again unless he does something. Now he turns to sit down with the thoughts on his mind while telling Demon to get ready for another night on the watch saying, “Well, why don’t you get some rest and head out there for another night to keep up on them!”
Meanwhile Demon hears and understands his command as though he were one of them even considering the fact that he can’t speak back in words of any kind. Soon Demon heads to the teepee from outside making his way inside to lie down on his mother’s wolf skins that have made his comfort over the many days of his life there.
It doesn’t take much longer before Eagle Feather Ute Indian decides that maybe he ought to wait a few days and see what else Demon comes up with. Or maybe on the other hand he should get some of his most trust worthy Ute Indian trackers and have them try and locate the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout. For some uncertain reason he feels as though he should probably act as fast as he possibly can before they take matters too far in to their own hands.
Then on the one hand Eagle Feather Ute Indian feels like waiting a few days to think about what he ought to do about that fact. He even has thoughts of having some of the Ute Indian band try to locate their hideaway by asking them to start staging more watches against the Civil War Quarters.
However, so far Single Feather Ute Indian and Two Feathers Ute Indian have already clued themselves in on the point that Demon must be doing dirty deeds for Eagle Feather Ute Indian. The fact of the matter is that they will eventually run in to Demon as well as the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideaway when they are out searching.
But for now they are laying low and staying away from Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s place so that they can be rested enough to make the plunge at night when it’s easier to keep from being spotted near there. Yet the rest of the Ute Indian band has no idea as to what’s really going on with the Ute Indian Warriors, although they have some ideas considering that they have noticed that the Ute Indian Warriors haven’t been around too much.
And when they do come they act quiet and disoriented and only seem to come for some food and grub. Then maybe the Ute Indian Warriors only come to pick up a few supplies and then they all end up leaving again like they want to be somewhere else.
Yet they seem to only come for certain supplies such as Ute Indian weapons and food considering that everything else they conjure up comes from the world of the Utah pioneers that they really hate so much from taking their ancestral land which was at one time an Indian burial site.
Nevertheless Eagle Feather Ute Indian sits outside watching the new day begin as everyone else in the Ute Indian campsite begins to wake up and start the morning with their daily activities. Moments later, Eagle Feather Ute Indian notices some of the Ute Indian band approaching his trader teepee from the distance. And as they approach, he thinks of asking them some questions, though he figures he’s let them start by asking about Demon.
Consequently he feels that he can go further by getting them all involved with watching the Civil War Quarters and maybe the Mound Fort Artillery Base once again. He is sure about doing this only to block out the Ute and Shoshoni Indian Warriors who have ganged up together obviously. Still he has no idea the there are others looking for the Ute Indian Warrior hideout who have noticed them and their strange behaviors and activities around the outside camping areas of the Mound Fort Artillery Base.
And as they approach, Eagle Feather Ute Indian pictures a conversation in mind even though he wants to wait until they mention some things first before rallying them back against his own peaceful offering to Jim Bridger.
CHAPTER TWENTY
Straight forth Eagle Feather Ute Indian tries to make himself more relaxed as the Ute Indian band approaches closer and closer to his trader teepee. And when they do reach his place, they become a little curious as to why Demon isn’t running around the place acting like he usually does every new morning.
Without wondering too much further about whether or not something doesn’t seems right all of a sudden, White Wolf Ute Indian asks about Demon looking like he’s tired considering she can see him lying there even from the outside of his teepee. Right away she questions Eagle Feather Ute Indian about this by acting a little nonchalant about the idea asking, “Why is Demon lying around instead of being hyperactive? Where was he last night?”
Straightaway Black Wolf Ute Indian catches on to White Wolf Ute Indian’s drift as though she were trying to beat or chisel some information from him just for the heck of it. With the same curiosities in mind, Black Wolf Ute Indian enquires, “Yes, we seen him run off pretty late last night!”
Without any additional unwillingness to hiding any more details from them when it seems as though they are already a step ahead of him, Eagle Feather thinks about just coming out and telling them everything. And now he feels like explaining a few details especially when they are onto what’s going on with the Ute Indian Warriors being away from their home most of the time. Straight off Eagle Feather thinks about how to approach his aspirations by instructing his Indian band partners, “I sent Demon on an errand last night!”
With no confusion at all, Den Wolf Mother Ute Indian is sure that she has everything all figured out already. And there’s no real reason to keep beating around the smoking sage bush any longer with what’s going on in Eagle Feather Ute Indian’s mind. For some uncanny reason she wants to get in to the point of the matter without spending too much time.
Quickly she just comes out and acting obnoxious while letting him in on his own secret making an inquiry, “Let me see; you sent him out to snoop after the Ute Indian Warriors without telling any of us!”
While trying to protect his own interests and from getting them too upset at him to where they may never truly trust him ever again, Eagle Feather Ute Indian makes a preoccupied short line telling them all, “It’s for good reasons!”
Moments later, Black Wolf Ute Indian makes a comment that tends to put a little shame on him boasting before he can get a word or two more out, “How could you do such a thing behind our back?”
Finally, Eagle Feather Ute Indian becomes very defensive considering that he feels like he’s being backed in to the corner by the Ute Indian band drilling, “What are you getting at; he’s a wolf for crying out loud! What do you want me to do with him?”
Next Den Wolf Mother Ute Indian comprehends the fact that he most definitely can hear them all talking and that she should bring this out saying, “He’s right there listening to us all!”
It appears that Eagle Feather Ute Indian is sure that Demon is of course listening to their conversation despite the fact that he is asleep or playing along like he is out like a light. Then he is also the one who has trained him much of the time since they had first found him at the Civil War Quarters.
With this thought in mind, Eagle Feather Ute Indian goes on to say, “Sure he’s listening; I’m one of the ones who trained and taught him everything, especially how to run errands for me such as finding the Ute Indian Warrior’s hangout!”
By then, White Wolf Ute Indian has come up with a devised plan that may better suit their apparent needs. When trying to mention her idea, she blatts, “I thought we were all on the same side when it comes to things such as keeping up our end of the deal!”
Immediately Black Wolf Ute Indian jumps in to the conversation saying, “How about we all just stick together and we’ll start watching the Civil War Quarters anyhow?”
At this time Eagle Feather Ute Indian can’t agree any more while knowing that the Ute Indian Warriors will stop at nothing to win over the lands of their back. With this in mind, Eagle Feather Ute Indian comes back expressing his emotions on the matter describing, “That’s a good idea for now! The Ute Indian Warriors will stop at nothing until they take our lands back. They feel that if they don’t then they aren’t really true warriors!”
After hearing his long like plea that gives the Ute Indian Warriors some thresh hold for bearing, Den Wolf Mother Ute Indian tries to avoid mentioning the Ute Indian Warriors too much shrieking, “We’ll stay away from looking for their hiding place!”
Next Black Wolf Ute Indian adds something of that nature going further, “We’ll leave that part up to Demon!”
Moments later, after pondering the images over within his mind again, Eagle Feather Ute Indian speaking out, “It would be better if you all wait until after dark and only watch the place without interacting. If the Ute Indian Warriors approach the Civil War Quarters then try and leave without them seeing you all there!”
Then before deciding to leave to do other things during the early morning hours, “Den Wolf Mother Ute Indian is curious as to what should they do in another instance asking, “What do we do if they do see us back there again?”
Nonetheless Eagle Feather Ute Indian hasn’t thought of everything so far. At this point in time, he will just have to go at it one step at a time and play it by ear so to speak. And with this dilemma in mind, Eagle Feather Ute Indian says, “Then just act nonchalant like you’re looking for Demon because he hasn’t been around and we thought he might be here looking for his mother! He’s a good excuse! And don’t worry about Grey Wolf right now, she’s picking out a mate for Demon! ”
Thereafter White Wolf Ute Indian looks again at Demon who is sleeping inside the teepee a little ways in and comments, “Demon looks tired. We’ll leave him sleep until tonight!”
Next Eagle Feather Ute Indian looks at her and says, “Don’t worry; he’ll be ready by then to watch the Ute Indian Warriors for another night until I decide what to do with them all!”
By now, Den Wolf Mother Ute Indian can only think about getting back to their chores for the day saying, “I think it’s time we attend to doing some of our chores such as washing clothes today!”
After thinking about everything they should do until they take another trip to the Civil War Quarters, Black Wolf Ute Indian agrees with her Indian relative relating, “Yes, I can think of many things were getting behind on!”
Now White Wolf Ute Indian can only think about leaving his trader teepee mentioning, “Let’s come back later before we head out!”
When they turn to leave, Eagle Feather Ute Indian has some last words to say to them asking, “Would you be kind enough to wash a few things I have in a bag?”
While wanting to be hands for all of their daily routines, Den Wolf Mother Ute Indian accepts turning back quickly contending, “Sure, I’ll wash them all for you and hang them out to dry!”
Moments later, Eagle Feather Ute Indian turns to grab his clothes as Demon sort of jumps to his feet to follow. Finally Eagle Feather Ute Indian hands the sack of clothes to Den Wolf Mother Ute Indian as Demon stands there watching with tired eyes. The three Indian females greet him and approach with a quick touch to his body petting him as he lies back down afterwards.
Right away, Den Wolf Mother Ute Indian turns away while saying to him, “Get some rest because you’re going to need it tonight!”
Immediately Demon responds and lies back down while watching them all leave while the area becomes livelier with more Ute Indians interacting about the Ute Indian campsite. Right then as the Ute Indian band of girls leaves to head back to their abodes to do their daily chores that they are behind on, Eagle Feather Ute Indian thinks about some things for at least a moment or so. And after doing so, he decides to have a talk with one of his personal Ute Indian scouts about trying to track down Demon once he has inlaid some tracks along the way to the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout.
Meanwhile he sits down and starts to do some errands of his own such as trying to make some more places to put things to sell and trade here and there. The Ute Indian band of females finally make their way to their Indian dwellings and start to gather their things that they need to take and wash at the Ogden River which is nearby only thirty or so feet. Even though it’s so close they tend to slack at their daily lives here and there with all of the commotions that are going on around the place lately.
While picking up their burlap sacks of clothes to take to wash, Black Wolf Ute Indian has something to say blabbing, “Do you think we should go back there tonight?”
Now White Wolf Ute Indian is sure that they have no choice with the actions of the Ute Indian Warriors bringing in the Shoshoni Indian Warriors in on it as well saying, “There’s not much else we can do with the Ute Indian Warriors ready to stage the Civil War Quarters again!”
Of course, Den Wolf Mother only wants to do what Eagle Feather Ute Indian said to do and that’s to act like they’re out there looking for Demon. She mentions this idea of his by describing, “We’ll just do what Eagle Feather said to do and that’s act like we’re looking for Demon!”
Next as they all head out to the river nearby, Black Wolf Ute Indian has a point to make stating, “We can’t say that every night?”
Finally White Wolf Ute Indian figures that they should have the Indian boys along for the watch along with them all announcing, “That’s why we should have Sharp Arrow, Lone Wolf, and Little Mean Wolf along with us just in case the Ute and Shoshoni Indian Warriors show up looking for trouble!”
Minutes later after they have left Eagle Feather Ute Indian has been waiting for many of his Ute Indian comrades to come in to view within the Ute Indian campsite. He’s been sitting around watching so he wouldn’t have to chase them down and seem desperate for anything. But now, one of his Ute Indian trackers is out near the ceremonial dance grounds talking to some Ute Indian children playing around.
At first he stands and looks and then moments later he decides to approach him to ask him for a favor. Once he reaches and catches up to the Ute Indian Tracker, Eagle Feather Ute Indian just acts natural before posing any questions. Straight off the Ute Indian Tracker comes forth with a question that ensures Eagle Feather Ute Indian that he is wisely onto the Ute Indian Warriors behaving and acting out in spite of their revenge for their ancestral grounds.
The Ute Indian Tracker wonders about the rumors he has heard asking, “So the word around is that the Ute Indian Warriors are up to their old ways again?”
Straight forth Eagle Feather Ute Indian is sure that he would be willing to help with his eagerness to speak of what he has heard. Especially considering that much of it has come from the fact that everyone knows everything about everyone else around here. And everyone in the Ute Indian campsite has obviously noticed that the Ute Indian Warriors haven’t been around too much. However they do come around once in a while only to gather some food and grub and maybe some clean clothes here and there.
Quickly he answers the Ute Indian Tracker back telling him, “Yes, they haven’t been around too much! I believe they are camping out at some hidden hideout they have somewhere northwest of the Ogden River Canyon. So far I have had Demon track them there and I’m going to have him go there again tonight. How about giving Demon a head start and then you track Demon and find out where this hideout is located?”
For a brief few seconds the Ute Indian Tracker thinks about it and how hard it may be to track Demon, although he feels that he could accomplish the location if he goes at it alone. With this in mind, the Ute Indian Tracker says, “No problem! I’ll go and do it myself. When do I have to follow Demon there?”
Right then, Eagle Feather Ute Indian explains the details instructing the Ute Indian Tracker, “Demon is sleeping right now, but when he wakes I will feed him and have him leave after the sun goes down!”
Immediately the Ute Indian Tracker agrees with his plan and decides that he should hurry and prepare for the journey replying, “Good! I’ll go get ready and prepared for the trip tonight!”
The Ute Indian Tracker turns to leave as Eagle Feather Ute Indian feels the urge to prepare some things for him to take along the journey as well. As the Ute Indian Tracker turns and leaves, Eagle Feather Ute Indian says, “I have some goodies for you that will help that you can take along!”
Lastly Eagle Feather Ute Indian turns to leave and head back to his trader teepee in order to prepare for his friend and his helping hand. And now Eagle Feather Ute Indian has a little bit of a smile on his face considering that some things have gone against his plans while other things are going as planned. Nevertheless he heads inside to pack an extra carrying bag for the Ute Indian Tracker to take along with his future endeavors.
Back at the Civil War Quarters Nicolaus is out front at the porch ready to clean up Demon’s front porch mess that he had left the previous night before. In fact, it is pretty rude in his mind that the young Ute Indian band children would even resort to such a thing during the middle of the night. Yet on the other hand, he and the others living there have no idea that it’s Demon’s considering that he just kind of brushes it off and cleans it up fast like only to forget about it.
Once Nicolaus has shoveled most of it away, the fort commander makes a stern comment from the side of the house while looking out in to the nearby trees towards the east side of the Civil War Quarters pointing out, “Maybe we should set a trap for them if they come back?”
Still for some reason Peter who is looking around towards the south side of the house noticing the Union Pacific Railroaders staring from a far distance as he says, “Let’s just keep an eye out in case they come back again!”
Next Peter turns back the other way towards the Civil War Quarters even while he has no idea as to their identity. In other words, Peter really has no notion of whether or not the few men standing around about a quarter mile away are employees of the Union Pacific Railroad.
Then on the other hand they may be other strangers of an unknown identity who are maybe just a bit to wee nosy. Nevertheless Peter tries to keep it to himself until a later time so that he doesn’t seem to make it obvious that he’s caught by their attention.
Moments later Nicolaus comes around the corner from cleaning the porch up while being ready to relieve the fort commander so that he is able to make his way up to the Mound Fort Artillery Base. Before the fort commander is able to leave, Nicolaus and Peter try to give a heads up on leaving them both alone even though he is afraid that things may be ready or about to turn around the other way.
Meanwhile as the fort commander is ready to walk up the hill leading to Mound Fort, he turns to them both saying, “Just keep an eye out just in case any of the Ute Indians return!”
Quickly the fort commander turns and leaves heading up to the Mound Fort Artillery Base as he does every day, although some days he arrives during different times of the day depending on what happens to be going on as far as topic of each day are concerned.
Once the fort commander makes his way a good many yards away, Peter turns to Nicolaus pointing him to walk behind the salt cellar in order to block the view from the strangers who he had noticed watching the Civil War Quarters.
When Nicolaus fades behind the front end of the salt cellar, Peter looks at him and gives Nicolaus the details about what he just saw before the fort commander left saying, “Hey, there are some men standing about a quarter or so mile away watching this place I think!”
Just then, Nicolaus almost steps back to look as Peter pulls his shoulder pulling him back associating, “Where?”
After that Peter quickly informs Nicolaus, “Don’t look because they’ll know we noticed them!”
Now Nicolaus is curious as to what direction they are at asking, “Where are they hiding?”
Right then and there Peter looks and points south towards the Ogden River which is about a half mile or so away blundering, “They were south of us about a quarter mile or so standing down there and when I looked they both slid behind some of the trees?”
Before walking out from behind the salt cellar, Nicolaus equivocates, “Maybe it was some Ute Indians!”
Furthermore Peter thinks back to a few minutes prior thinking about how they definitely had a white complexion to their faces replying, “No, they were some white folks and they looked kind of suspicious!”
Finally, Nicolaus gets sort of anxious to try and take a look that way saying, “Here, I’ll act natural and we’ll go inside and take a look from out the back window then!”
Immediately Nicolaus begins to head inside of the back porch door of the Civil War Quarters while Peter follows nonchalant like without giving any heed to anything else. Once they make their way inside, Nicolaus looks out the back window while pulling a curtain back away a few good inches or so to take a look.
At first, Nicolaus looks and doesn’t see anyone or anybody while probing Peter, “Where I don’t see anyone out there?”
Hurriedly Peter moves closer to the window to take a peek out there to see if they are still there watching, although some of the view is blocked by the many trees that separate them through much distance. Though for a moment he is able to focus on an image that appears to be two individuals standing many tree lines away about an eighth of a mile away. Yet they seem like just specs and there’s not any clear visible line of sight to affix on.
Just then, Peter tells Nicolaus while pointing the direction saying, “There! They’re right down there looking this way!”
Moreover Nicolaus continues looking for another moment or so even though he doesn’t really see anyone or anything out of the ordinary while contending, “I don’t see anybody out that way!”
As Peter looks through the trees into the distance seeing only what seem to be only specs, he answers back telling Nicolaus, “Well, it’s hard to see through the trees when they keep moving around back and forth from behind all those trees way over there!”
Nicolaus looks again and thinks that maybe he can see some people standing afar off, although there are lots of stragglers around as well. With this in mind, Nicolaus thinks about that while recoiling to Peter, “It could be anybody out there watching and camping around desperate for a place to stay!”
Consequently Peter believes whoever they are out there, they are watching the place. In his mind it would be better to keep an eye out anyways. And not to leave out the fact that they are white and not Indian and that brings about a lot of questions of ethic proportion at this point in time.
Next Peter comes back with his feelings exclaiming, “Whoever it is out there, they are watching this place and they aren’t Indian and they aren’t settling down in no tents either?”
Lastly Nicolaus looks once again and sees some images of some guys out in the distance as the lower branches of some trees move allowing some visibility. When he catches a few glimpses of them, Nicolaus elaborates, “I can see some guys standing down that way, but it looks like they’re just messing around and I don’t see any tents down there or anything!”
Already Peter is agreeing with him by floundering, “Those are the dudes I’m talking about standing over there. I think they’re watching the place!”
Thus Nicolaus is sure that they don’t appear to be Chinese which means that they are probably some white settlers rather than some railroad workers trying to move their way in to the area expounding, “They look like some white settlers probably just trying to camp out and they have nothing. If they were Chinese I’d think they were some Union Pacific Railroad workers trying to force the railroad through to Promontory, Utah!”
Anyways Peter has a feeling that they should still be careful either way until they know who they are and what they are dealing with at the time. With this in mind, Peter decides to keep up the safety considering that it may appear that the Indians are back as well, contemplating, “I still think we’d better keep an eye on them just in case something happens and they’re planning something. And we may have some Ute Indian hiding out again nearby too!”
Finally Nicolaus has some plans of his own with some protection saying, “Maybe we ought to try some trapping and see if we can catch one of them sons of a gun!”
Nevertheless Peter wonders what he has in mind asking, “Catch them with what?”
There’s no doubt that Nicolaus has some things figured out revealing, “We can set a few snares and some noose snares out there!”
Of course, Peter doesn’t think that they could set up any snares or traps if the Ute Indians are back watching the place anyways expressing, “With the Ute Indians out there watching? We wouldn’t stand a chance! And what happens if we catch some Ute Indian in a snare or some Utah Mormon settler!”
Then Nicolaus describes what they can do exclaiming, “We can disarm them and arrest them for breaking a peaceful treaty!”
Meanwhile the Union Pacific Railroad case workers are still nearby watching trying to make something out of all of this around the Civil War Quarters. So far there isn’t too much going on, although the rumor has it that this is one good place to start anyhow. At this time, the railroad construction manager Gus is hiding behind some other trees considering the fact that he thought they might have seen them when Peter just happened to look their way right before the time the fort commander left for the Mound Fort Artillery Base up on top of the hill.
Momentarily the railroad construction manager Gus turns to the railroad office manager and the tour guides who they have hired and paid very well to assist them in accompanying them on this quest saying, “I’m pretty sure one of them saw me back there when we were hiding in that other spot under those trees over there!”
Another question comes from one of the tour guides who wonders if they are still looking back asking, “Are they looking back you think?”
Soon the railroad construction manager Gus gives more details of what he thinks he saw with his binoculars compounding, “No, but I saw the window shades open up next to the back porch! I think maybe that they went inside to look out without us noticing or something!”
Finally the railroad office manager feels that they should not make it so obvious by saying, “Maybe we should fade back a few hundred feet and then set a tent up to make it look like we are camping out!”
At last the railroad construction manager Gus agrees by unfolding, “Why not; we’re just waiting to see what Indian activity is going on anyhow! And so far there’s been nothing!”
By now, the fort commander has made his way back up to the Mound Fort Artillery Base where he is talking with some of the Utah Mormon settlers. He is talking about the little incident the night before to show them that maybe all of their troubles aren’t really over with after all. Maybe they were being played until Jim Bridger left so they could start their old ways with their sacred land again.
The fort commander informs some Mormon Missionaries about the night before. He informs a pair who are thinking of going around the area to do a little home teaching even if it means going around to tents.
While thinking about the incident the night prior, the fort commander tells the incident balking, “Just be careful and stay away from the Ogden River Canyon right now. We had a little incident down at the Civil War Quarters and there’s a chance that some of the Ute Indian bands may be back around!”
One of the Mormon Missionary brothers ponders the thought over for a second before answering back with, “Oh, we’ll be careful! We’re going towards the center of downtown Ogden to do our home teachings!”
The other Mormon Missionary brother has an opinion about their daily visitations with teaching the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints instructing the fort commander, “
Then the fort commander has something more to say as he is interrupted by a Broome family member asking, “I heard you had told some people that there was an incident down the hill at the Civil War Quarters?”
Next the Mormon Missionary brothers turn to leave as though they have a mission to accomplish for their two years of service. Now the fort commander gives his attention to the Broome female family member saying, “Yes, there was a knock at the door late at night and nobody was there when my personnel answered the front door and we think it was Indian children perhaps!”
Thereafter the Broome female family member catches images of what some of the rumors have foretold around the outside Indian camps out and around the Mound Fort Artillery Base. With these visions pouring forth at hand, she says, “There are rumors of a wolf mother that had been hunted and trapped by Jim Bridger and made as an offering for peace within these walls?”
Afterwards the fort commander wonders where she had heard that rumor about the wolf hunting incident while contemplating with her, “Where did you hear that rumor?”
The Broome female family member stops and thinks to herself for a second or so before quilling, “The rumor started with many of the Ute Indians camping around Mound Fort! They said something about Jim Bridger making a peaceful trade with the Indians!”
After hearing some more to her truth, the fort commander becomes curious as to what else she has heard asking, “And what else have you heard?”
Now the Broome female family member carries on a little further as a few other patrons around the inside of the walls start to listen with their ears more attuned. Then, so that some others can overhear the conversation, she goes on further by saying publicly, “Some of the rumors I heard were that some of the Ute Indians aren’t too happy about it even though they live and eat around here. And some of them said they had guns hidden just in case anything was to happen!”
Once those words of hers were told, many others were listening, although many of them have heard the rumors too and they think that such a peaceful deal is artificial and above the surface. Next the fort commander figures that this fort is small and that everyone seems to know each other’s business around here and that he may as well tell the truth to them all.
After thinking about the idea for a brief moment, the fort commander says, “Yes, there was a peaceful trade made with a wolf skin that Jim Bridger hunted along with some other furs and trappings that we all pitched in. And there was a deal made with the Ute Indians by Jim Bridger before he left back for Salt Lake City!”
One of the Lamb farmer members steps forward wanting to no more about all of this asking, “Do you really think a peaceful deal will stop the Ute Indians from coming back for their land?”
The fort commander tries to ignore the question, but it’s really plain and clear that the Ute Indian may come back eventually tallying, “No, I don’t think it will keep the Ute Indians from wanting their land back!”
After hearing most of the conversations, a Hunt family member has some feelings on the point explaining, “After hearing what happened at your place last night, it won’t be long before they do come back!”
There’s no doubt that a few more members of the Mound Fort Artillery Base are concerned about their safety, especially the teacher of the Priesthood meetings who heard rumors of a dark wolf strolling near the night before saying, “And I heard rumors of the wolf pack coming back to revenge their loss and revenge on this place!”
The fort commander thinks back to his Priesthood meetings which resulted in conversations about hunting anyhow. With only thoughts of feeling protected as an integral group, the fort commander comments, “Then maybe it’s time to do some hunting?”
Just then, everybody starts to leave as the Hunt family member turns saying, “Time to catch me a wolf!”
Everyone disperses as the fort commander heads inside the building of the Mound Fort Artillery Base. Once he enters inside, he decides to check on the Artillery rooms to see what weaponry and artilleries are there that have been sitting waiting for quite a while.
It appears that the time will come when it will all have to be put to use. In fact, now he is glad that they have an arsenal built up, although he has mostly only farmers and Mormon settlers there by his side along with a few infantry men. And not to leave out the fact that he doesn’t have any men to send back east to the Union lines neither considering that he must preserve the members that he has there now.
Now at the other side of the town of Ogden as far as the Weber Canyon the Ogden Mountain Man is talking to Captain James S. Brown about trying again at finding where the Ute Indian Warrior’s hideout is located. He has tried a few times with no avail and figures that maybe it’s a little further away or hidden better than he first must have expected.
But for some reason he feels that he must give it another try before they try anything against the Mound Fort Artillery Base which could lead to more conflicts between Captain James S. Brown’s Fort which used to be his fort in another name’s sense. And he doesn’t seem to leave out the fact that the Shoshoni Indian Warriors have been seen by some informants passing through Weber Canyon heading towards the Ogden River Canyon. Meanwhile the Ogden Mountain Man begins to pack his horse in order to get ready to leave for the vicinity of the Civil War Quarters.
Once he is nearly packed, the Ogden Mountain Man turns to Captain James S. Brown saying, “Well, I think it’s about time to take a trip down to the Civil War Quarters to check things out a bit!”
Nonetheless the Ogden Mountain Man is going at it alone and he will obviously need all of the good luck he can get. With this possibility in mind, Captain James S. Brown tries to slow him down a little by mentioning, “Be careful; the Shoshoni Indian Warriors are probably joined up with the Ute Indian Warriors by now.”
The Ogden Mountain Man agrees with him about how he should take extra precautions with both the Ute and Shoshoni Indian Warriors being teamed up together perhaps. With this fear in his head, the Ogden Mountain Man shrills, “I’ll keep a look out! I’m just going there to have a looked around and check in with the place to see how things are going is all!”
Right away, before the Ogden Mountain Man begins to head out with his departure to the Mound Fort Civil War Quarters, Captain James S. Brown asks, “Are you sure you don’t want me to come along with you?”
Without any further hesitation to the thought of needing any help, the Ogden Mountain Man puts his left foot in the stirrup and steps onto his horse and then he pulls his bridle the other way ready to head off saying, “No, I’ll be fine! Someone needs to stay in command of the Captain’s Fort anyhow!”
The Ogden Mountain Man pulls his bridle the other way and leaves the scene on a ten mile or so journey from Weber Canyon in to the future town of Riverdale and past the town of Ogden towards the Civil War Quarters down the hill from the Mound Fort Artillery Base.
Maybe this time he will have some better luck at finding the whereabouts of the Ute Indian Warrior hideout now that they are teamed up with the Shoshoni Indian Warriors. Then on the other hand maybe they’ll find him first or he’ll be too late to make much of a difference with saving the Mound Fort on the hill anyhow.
