Dr. VN Sharma joined the Institute in 1965 as a technical staff in MSE. Later he did MTech from the same dept. He continued to work in technical positions in the dept. In 1979 he joined SAIL at their R&D centre in Ranchi and retired from there in 2002. In between, he also did his PhD from ISM Dhanbad.
While having his regular meals in the hall messes, he observed the impossible and precarious conditions in which mess workers worked and lived. In the 1970s he was actively involved in the mess workers’ struggles for dignified work conditions and living till he left the campus in 1979. As a student he was active in student affairs and held multiple positions in student gymkhana and later with Karmchari Sangathan as well as mess workers’ organisation.
In SAIL he remained involved in worker and employee rights and held positions in the officers and employees’ associations of SAIL. Dr. VN Sharma’s was a multifaceted personality who was involved on multiple worker and civic issues all his life and was willing to speak up everywhere for the rights of the marginalised. An indefatigable friend of Hamara Manch, in recent years he was actively involved with IITK Citizens’ Forum, a body of engaged IITK alumni for the rights of its workers. After retirement he was a leading part of the Right to Education movement in the country as well as civic issues in Ranchi where he was settled and breathed his last on 23rd May.
We will virtually meet on Sunday 14th June at 8 pm IST to celebrate the life and work of Dr. Sharma and to remember his multifaceted personality. You are all welcome to join.
