We are a collective of alumni of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), India who are concerned about dismal working conditions within the campus particularly for the contract labour and the self-employed. In this endeavour we are supported by several students, faculty, permanent and contract employees and other members of the IIT Kanpur campus.

We believe that a continued debate is necessary to realize that our own democratic space, where we all enjoy a fair and just society, depends upon the protection and expansion of rights of each one of 'us'. And that 'us' should include not only the elite and the middle class but also the construction workers, mess workers, vendors and such. We hope to further this debate.

At the moment, our efforts are particularly directed towards

• • Engaging the administration in moving forward.

  • Informing and involving the wider alumni networks.

  • Archiving related incidents and efforts.

The broader objective being to:

• • Ensure that the workers get their legal dues, and a safe, dignified workplace.

  • Ensure that workers get due representation and participation in the issues that concern them.

  • Promote accountability of the system, particularly the IITK administration and the contractors, for example, in regards to hire and fire, award of punishments etc.

Through this website we hope to move forward in some of these goals, particularly in evolving connections with the wider alumni network.
