Open House 2013 resolution

The following resolution was passed by the house:

Contract workers are as much part of the institute as anybody else. Hence it is their right to earn a livelihood with dignity and it is IITK's responsibility as an institution to ensure this.

The law ought to be followed not only on paper but in spirit. The institute needs to ensure that the law is upheld in its spirit. For this all the concerned parties need to function in a responsible and accountable manner: contractors, institute authorities as well as workers. This can happen only if there is a transparent system in place that grants workers a legitimate voice.

As an initial step, we need to ensure that every worker in campus has a proper identity and access to a transparent and participative grievance redressal system with representation of the workers and the users group. The institute community (faculty, students, staff, and all other concerned community members) must participate in making the system accountable and accessible to the workers. All this can be and should be achieved in a time bound manner.

This house demands a system that is transparent and based on due process and that is accessible to all contract workers and in which the institute community is an active participant.
