Workplace atmosphere
The attitude that the workers are second-class citizens reflects keenly in the worksite conditions and spaces accessible to them within the campus. This extends from lack of basic amenities like toilets, to violation of safety norms leading to deaths. Children of workers living in the campus (for example those in servant quarters) are denied access to the common grounds, while workers themselves may be warned for even talking with their coworkers. Some of the documentation in this regards can be accessed below.
We also recommend the reader to look at the documentation of the accidents, several of which bring out (lack of) safety practices to the fore.
Since inception Citizens' Forum has continuously engaged with the administration with respect to this issue. You can find a list of related communications here.
Lack of basic amenities and denial of access to common resources. In particular look at:
Hall-X Construction Site Amenities for Workers, a short document prepared by students, 2010.
On conditions of sewage workers (in Hindi), a report prepared by a doctorate student at IITK, 2009.
Denial of legitimate space to workers' children: even those residing within campus are denied admissions and playgrounds.
