Subject: Eight work related deaths at IITK are enough

Dated: Wed, Oct 31, 2012 at 6:25 AM

Dear friend,

Another construction related death has taken place at IITK campus. Shri Atar Singh died after a fall from 3rd floor of hostel being built on the campus. This is third death from a fall in the last 18 months. Since 2007, 8 workers have died and three have seriously been injured. The safety of workers is being ignored by contractor and IIT supervisors. The administration which as a principal employer has the responsibility for ensuring respect of workers’ rights has been ineffective. The crisis has reached an epidemic proportion.

We, the alumni, who have received a good education at IITK, and have become successful citizens, have an imperative along with many other progressive minded people to ensure that the rights of fellow human beings i.e. the workers at IIT Kanpur, are respected. We thank you for your deep concern for the dignity and human rights of workers by signing our petitions in the past.

Citizens Forum of (IITK ) alumni has already written to the Alumni association and the Board of Governors asking them to intervene. We all need to do the same. We humbly ask you to join us in this effort. Please write as soon as possible to the new Director Indranil Manna (director@cgcri.res.in) and copies to the following:

Chairman Board of Governors Prof Anandakrishnan (ananda1928@gmail.com)

Secretary of Alumni Assocaition Prof. Sudhir Misra (sud@iitk.ac.in)

Chairman MWMC Prof. Bose pbose@iitk.ac.in

DRPG drpg@iitk.ac.in

Also please copy it to us at citizensforumatiitk@gmail.com. We are enclosing a suggested letter which you may use as is or modify if desired. If you have received this email not because you are an alumni but a progressive minded person concerned about human rights, please make appropriate changes in our suggested letter.

We thank you for your participation in our efforts for seeking justice and fairness for the workers at IITK.

Sincerely,

Sushil Handa (BT/AE/1966)
