After Pentecost    Pentecost 21     Matthew 23:1-12

Dressing to Impress (YA No 76)

Jesus was one who saw beneath

All shallow false pretence;

All fine appearance was for him

A source of real offence.

He saw ‘the pious’ play their games

Of claiming pride of place;

They dressed to capture great respect;

But were a deep disgrace.

“If you exalt yourself, beware

You will be humbled so;

But those who know humility

Will see their greatness grow.”

Thus Jesus teaches us today –

We don’t need empty praise;

In humble service we will find

Fulfilment all our days.
