Life can be full or empty (Vol 4 No 90)
Our life can be full and empty as well;
Full when we share love; live under its spell;
But times we endure and wish to dispel
Are times of our suff’ring, when life is a shell.
When meaning seems gone, when life is a chore
We look for relief, for purpose and more;
We wish to be useful and not to withdraw
From living and sharing in life’s marvellous store.
If meals have no food, a speech has no word,
Then both are a sham, are tragic, absurd;
And life without love, where no kindness is stirred
Is just like a concert when nothing is heard.
So where can we find support that we need?
The guidance, the strength, the will to proceed?
Compassion from others in both word and deed
Can make the world different – where God can succeed.
For God is within, as Jesus has shown;
And prompts us have strength, more than we have known;
In traumas and suff’ring through which we have grown
The Gospel assures us we’re never alone.
