The great feast (Vol 1 No 86)
Stories that Jesus used
Could comfort or annoy.
Religious leaders felt accused;
They did not share the joy
That common people felt
When Rabbi Jesus said
That they were welcome where he dwelt;
With them he’d share his bread.
‘Come to a festive meal’
The invitation said.
With all prepared, the host’s appeal
Was, ‘Come now and be fed.’
But all with one accord,
Insulting with excuse,
They muttered things so untoward;
It was severe abuse!
One said he had to go
And test some beasts he’d bought.
Another purchased land and so
He needed his report.
My marriage, said a third,
Was reason not to come. -
As shameful as you’ve ever heard;
The host was overcome.
So all the servants went
To find the poor and blind.
“Invite them all. It’s my intent
To show the world I’m kind.”
They went into the hills
And made them all come in.
The host, with joy, said, “This fulfils
My dream. Now let’s begin.”
Stories like this give hope
To people in despair,
To those despised, who cannot cope,
To those who live ‘nowhere’.
‘Inclusive’ is the song
For none are left outside;
In God’s own kingdom we belong;
In God’s we all abide.
