Each time I visit Calvary (Vol 3 No 64)
Each time I visit Calvary
The horror of the scene I see.
I hear the shouts of “Crucify”
The sight of Jesus makes me cry.
I cry because I see him fall;
His cry of anguish, I recall;
His agony, his painful death;
Yet uttered love with his last breath.
I cry for all humanity -
We often use brutality
To silence love, to crush good-will,
To punish, crucify, to kill.
My tears confess the part I play;
For I am weak; I run away;
The Cross and shame - the guilt I share,
My causing harm helps keep him there.
When I avoid some human need,
When I ignore the ones who bleed,
Each time I fail to love and care –
These wrongs still cause him deep despair.
But that was many years ago;
It’s here and now I need to know
That lack of love and human pride
Cause Jesus’ death. That’s why he died.
