Oh David
I've never been a little boy.
I never thought to look
For pebbles in his pockets
Or the homemade fishing hook.
I've never jumped in mud holes
Or run out in the rain
Just to see how wet that I could get
'Til someone called my name.
I've never wrestled dinosaurs
Or made a cardboard car.
I haven't seen the moon and thought,
'I'd like to go that far.'
I've never made a pile of sticks
I found out in the yard.
I've never caught a bug and thought
To bring it in the car.
I've never seen what others may,
A bunch of wilting weeds.
I've only seen hand picked bouquets
Meant lovingly for me.
I never knew that I could learn
To love that dirty smell.
He gets it when he runs too fast.
I know those hugs so well.
I never knew 'I love you,'
When coming straight from him,
Could make my heart completely melt
And simply make me grin.
I'm seeing life through different eyes
Of dirt and rocks and fun.
I've never been a little boy;
I sure love raising one.
