If I Had Been

When my friend suggested we write a song with the theme of "If I Were an Angel" for our next Women's Christmas Choir concert, this song came about. . .but it quickly turned into a children's song instead of a piece for Women's Chorus. You'll find two versions below--one is the short and sweet children's solo or unison version. The other is my adaptation for the youth to sing in our ward's Christmas Program. It includes an additional chorus of Alleluias and a simple violin part. The MP3 is a concert recording of the longer version, with three young women soloists, a violin, and our Women's Choir as backup.

LYRICS

If I had been an angel the night of Jesus' birth,

Who sang his praise from heaven as he came to live on earth,

I would have sung with glory, and raised my voice on high

To thank him for his mercy and his love for all mankind.

If I had been a shepherd, watching in the night,

Who heard the angels singing and saw the star so bright,

I would have knelt in wonder, and said a silent prayer

To help me find the manger, and the baby lying there.

If I had been a wise-man, searching for the star

To lead me to the Savior and guide me from afar,

I would have gladly followed to worship at his feet,

With gifts of love and beauty to set before my King.

And though I can't remember that Christmas long ago,

I still can sing his praises and tell the world I know

That Jesus is my Savior who gave his life for me

And I will seek and honor him and follow where he leads.
