This has always been one of my favorite Christmas carols! Who doesn't love to sing Gloria! in cascading scales?
This duet version has some different rhythms which make this old carol fresh and fun to sing. It can be sung in treble or bass ranges. My women's choir enjoyed it, as did my sons, in the recording here.
2025 - an updated Choral version (for 2-part choir) makes this accessible for middle ranges in a choral setting.
Voicing: SA/TB or 2-part choir
Accompaniment: Piano
Topics: Christmas
French Carol, arranged by Rachel P. Mohlman
LYRICS
Angels we have heard on high,
Sweetly singing o'er the plains.
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria in excelsis deo!
Gloria in excelsis deo!
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the tidings be
Which inspire your heav'nly song?
Gloria in excelsis deo!
Gloria in excelsis deo!
Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn King!
Gloria in excelsis deo!
Gloria in excelsis deo!
In excelsis deo!
Gloria!
Gloria!
