O Come, O Come, Immanuel

I wanted to arrange something a capella for the Kennewick Stake Relief Society Christmas Choir. This is an old, well-known, haunting hymn. I love the message of invitation to the Lord to come, but I wanted the invitation to extend not only to the Savior coming as a babe into the world, but also to our Resurrected Lord who will come again, and soon! I asked Anne Adams, a talented choir member and friend, to craft the lyrics for a new verse looking forward to the future.

LYRICS

O come, o come, Immanuel,

And ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here

Until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice, rejoice! Immanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, o come, great Lord of might,

Who to thy tribes on Sinai's height

In ancient times once gave the law

In cloud and majesty and awe.

Rejoice, rejoice! Immanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Desire of nations, bind

In one the hearts of all mankind;

Bid thou our sad divisions cease,

And be Thyself our King of Peace.

Rejoice, rejoice! Immanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.

We know Thy final advent is near;

Prepare each heart that we Thy voice may hear.

Give strength, O Lord, to serve Thee well,

And be our Champion still Immanuel!

O come, Immanuel!

Come and ran som Israel!

Rejoice, rejoice! Immanuel

Shall come to thee, O Israel.
