[p. 52] BHABHA é mencionado: The importance of the metaphor\metonymy distinction to post-colonial texts is also raised by Homi Bhabha [“Representation and the colonial text: a critical exploration of some forms of mimeticism”. In The theory of reading. 1984 ]. His point is that the perception of the figures of the text as metaphors imposes a universalist reading because metaphor makes no concessions to the cultural specificity of texts. For Bhabha it is preferable to read the tropes of the text as metonymy, which symptomatizes the text, reading through its features the social, cultural, and political forces which traverse it. Fiquei surpreso em descobrir que SPIVAK, não SAID, criou o termo Othering: [p. 97-8] “In Not Wanted on the Voyage, Canadian Timothy Findley returns to the source of a number of persistent western practices crucial to colonialism and imperialism – those associate with what Gayatri Spivak terms ‘Othering’ (spivak 1985a). These include the assumption of authority, ‘voice’, and control of the ‘word’, that is, seizure and control of the means of interpretation and communication. In many post-colonial texts, this is achieved by mean of a ‘rewriting’ of canonical stories. Findley extends this method of ‘writing back’ to the center of empire by rewriting the biblical story of Noah and the Great Flood, a source myth in western civilization for motifs of destruction and salvation – destruction of the many, salvation of the few.”

2. [p. 167: The empire...] A discourse in the Foucaultian sense is best understood as a system of possibility for knowledge. What rules, for instance, allow the construction of a map, model, or cassifactory system? What rules allow us to identify certain individuals as authors, to identify certain texts as ‘literature’? [p. 147 The Empire...] For Brathwaite, Creolization is a cultural action based upon the ‘stimulus-response’ of individuals to their environment and, within culturally discrete white-black groups, to each other. But the abrogation of that center does not involve the construction of an alternative focus of subjectivity, a new ‘centre’. Rather the act of appropriation in the post-colonial text issues in the embracing of that marginality as the fabric of social experience.

Abrogation is a refusal of the categories of the imperial culture, its aesthetic, its illusory standard of normative or ‘correct’ usage, and its assumption of a traditional and fixed meaning ‘inscribed’ in the words. It is a vital moment in the de-colonizing of the language and the writing of ‘english’, but without the process of appropriation the moment of abrogation may not extend beyond a reversal of the assumptions of privilege, the ‘normal’, and correct inscription, all of which can be simple taken over and maintained by the new usage. Appropriation is the process by which the language is taken and made to ‘bear the burden’ of one’s own cultural experience, or, as Raja Rao puts it, to ‘convey in a language that is not one’s own the spirit that is one’s own.’ Language is adopted as a tool and utilized in various ways to express widely differing cultural experiences. These differences may exist in cultures which appear to be quite similar. For in one sense all post-colonial literatures are cross-cultural because they negotiate a gap between ‘worlds’, a gap in which the simultaneous processes of abrogation and appropriation continually strive to define and determine their practiece. [The Empire… p. 38-9]

9. There are three main types of linguistic groups within post-colonial discourse: monoglossic, diglossic and polyglossic. [The Empire… p. 39]

Objetidão: Neologismo aqui empregado como síncope das palavras “objeto” e “solidão”, em uma tentativa de descrever o sentimento provocado pelo processo de reificação do indivíduo na sociedade pós-colonial caribenha. Estou utilizando esse termo e derivados (objetude, objetificação, coisificação, etc.) para significar a transformação do sujeito em objeto, em coisa, para evitar a repetição do vocábulo “reificação” e para enfatizar a presença da palavra “objeto”, em sua própria constituição, em contraste com “sujeito”, fato que não se verifica em “reificação”, uma vez que a sua etimologia se encontra muito distante do conhecimento comum atual da palavra latina res (“coisa”) que a originou. Colonialismo: termo geralmente usado para referir-se a uma situação em que representantes de um país invadem e se estabelecem em um outro, impondo um sistema legal, um governo e estruturas institucionais. Postmodernism represents a particular way – or rather a diversity of related ways – of understanding contemporaneity; post-colonialism works with different maps, chronologies, narratives and political agendas. The two are by no means entirely disjunct, however, and a recent attempt to consider their points of contiguity will be discussed later in this introduction. P. 4-5 [introd. Imperialismo: termo mais geral que é usado para significar relações de exploração, tais como quando há relações comerciais forçadas, a imposição de uma religião nova, interferência externa no sistema legal e no governo, etc, mas quando não há colonização civil em larga escala.
