The Department of History is committed to supporting students both academically and personally throughout their time at University. 

This page outlines some of the key pastoral services available to students across the University, as well as some key external support services.

Find all the support on offer from the University and Students’ Union - from financial help, to free facilities and discounts across campus.

For updates on what we offer for students to help in their wellbeing, please check out our blog. As well as a blog, we also record our webinars and they are able to view here.

If you have an existing physical or mental health related disability, or a specific learning difficulty, you should contact DDSS as soon as possible.

DDSS is a confidential, friendly service offering a range of support. They will be able to work with you and us, as your academic department, to make sure you have all the support you need.

These sessions are designed for disabled students, but you don’t have to be registered with DDSS. The workshops have been developed by our specialist mentor team who have extensive experience in supporting disabled students during their studies.

DDSS have also launched a new monthly support group for disabled PGR students.

Help is available if you need support with your mental health at any point during your time at Sheffield. The service is staffed by experienced mental health professionals.

You should access this service if you develop a new mental health concern, or experience an exacerbation of an existing condition, during the course of your studies. 

The Student Wellbeing Service is designed to complement services such as SAMHS and offers short-term, tailored one-to-one support for students who are experiencing low mood or feeling overwhelmed with student life. 

It aims to support improved emotional wellbeing by offering practical advice, self-help techniques and a confidential space to talk about the difficulties you're experiencing.

The 301: Academic Skills Centre offers a range of skills support resources. 

The Academic Skills for Wellbeing page helpfully highlights guides that are particularly useful for making sure that you are prioritising your wellbeing in your approach to your studies. 

SSiD have extensive knowledge of University processes and are able to help with a wide range of queries. They also provide certifying letters and other useful documents. The SSiD Support Hub pages can point you in the right direction for information about welfare and support issues.

The Student Advice Centre is a professional, impartial, confidential and non-judgemental service run by the Students' Union providing free advice, support and representation in areas such as housing, money, immigration as well as a range of other issues.

Including BAME students, LGBTQIA+ students, the Women's Committee, Disabled Students' Committee and support for mature students, estranged students, care-leavers, student carers and student parents.
