MA departmental help and support

The Department of History is committed to supporting students both academically and personally throughout their time at University.

This page focuses in on MA-specific help and support in the Department. You will broader support guidance and services information on our general help and support page.

Who can I talk to if I have a problem or need support

Your personal tutor and the postgraduate support team are available if you have questions or issues during your studies.

They are there to you with any difficulties you may be experiencing and point in you in the right direction for specialist help or any additional skills development you may be interested in.

What to do if you experience illness or other circumstances that may affect your academic performance. Including how to request an extension or assessment deferral, if you think your circumstances may affect your ability to complete your assessment by the deadline.

What to do if your circumstances mean you need to miss a seminar.

What to do if you think you need a break or are consider leaving University.

Accessing support for a pre-existing medical condition

If you have pre-existing medical condition - physical or mental health related - it is important that you access support early on in your degree. This is particularly important for the MA programme which has a shorter duration than a BA degree

This support will usually be set-up through the Disability and Dyslexia Support Service, who will be able to offer advice about relevant support and, if appropriate, provide us with a Learning Support Plan. See their setting up disability support page as a starting point.

Setting up support through DDSS will help ensure that we are able to offer you all of the support you need to make the most of the MA degree. A Learning Support Plan will also act as medical evidence should you need an extension for any of your assessed work. It may also be helpful for you to contact your personal tutor or a member of the postgraduate support team to discuss support. Our PGT disability support document lists many of the frequently-made recommendations for adjustments, and how we address these within the department.

For students with an impairment that has an affect your written work - such as dyslexia; an autism spectrum condition or pre-lingual deafness - you are likely to be eligible to take part in the University's yellow sticker scheme. You should contact DDSS to discuss eligibility and other support that we may be able to offer. Find out more about the yellow sticker scheme and guidance on submission of work.

Sheffield graduates with existing Learning Support Plans

If you took your BA degree at Sheffield and had a Learning Support Plan, your LSP will not automatically roll forward to your MA degree. You should contact DDSS at the start of the academic year to arrange a review of your support requirements and ensure that we have an up-to-date plan that is relevant to the MA programme's teaching and assessment methods
