Every year, Sheffield History students benefit from the experience of spending part of their degree in another country.
Single and dual honours History students (excluding East Asian Studies and Modern Languages) have the opportunity to spend a year at one of our European partner institutions, or take part in the University-wide study abroad programme which includes universities in North America, Asia and Australia.
Benefits to studying abroad include:
● Experiencing another culture and/or language
● Studying History from new perspectives
● Making new friends and contacts that can last a lifetime
● Opportunities to improve your skills in a foreign language
● Expanding your experiences to help with future career plans.

One replacement year studying abroad via history's partnerships to replace your second year of study.
You’ll study topics equivalent to those you would be studying in Sheffield and your results will count towards your final degree classification. It is for this reason that we recommend that students take an additional year instead of this option.

One additional year (3+1 degree) studying abroad in year 3, between your second and final year of study.
You'll choose classes that broaden your knowledge and help prepare you for your final year of study when you return to Sheffield.
Students must pass the equivalent of approximately 120 credits while studying abroad but these do not count towards your final degree classification. Your additional year abroad will be marked on a pass/fail basis. You will also complete short assignments set by the University of Sheffield, which encourage you to reflect on your experiences.

Summer schools are a great alternative for students who don't want to spend a whole year abroad.
The Global Opportunities team can help you spend between 1 and 8 weeks at one of our partner university summer schools in Europe or further afield.
