MA welcome 2023

Discover how we can support you

The Department of History is committed to supporting students both academically and personally throughout their time at University.  This page includes a link to our quick help guide, as well as other key information that will help you get the support you need set-up as soon as possible.

Please note that you will need to be logged into your Sheffield student MUSE account to access some of these pages. Students who have accepted an unconditional offer will be able to do this from early September once you've received your pre-registration phase two email.

Meet the postgraduate team and find out what to do if you have a question, or need to access support.

This page also includes links to more information about History support processes and University level support.

The University has a wide range of support services  that can support you if you experience illness or personal circumstances during your studies.

You may also find the 301 academic skills for wellbeing page a good place to start.

The Wellbeing Service are offering online seminar talks and on campus drop-ins to introduce you to how they can support you during your time at Sheffield.

The Arts and Humanities Wellbeing Advisors are Ben and Cat and they will also be at the History MA talk to say hello and offer a quick overview of the service.

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is committed to providing a supportive environment for all of its students, including trans and non-binary students who wish their gender identities to be known and students who use a preferred name different to that on their student record.

If you would like to let us know your pronouns and preferred name, where they differ to those on your student record, please complete the form on the above page.

If you have pre-existing medical condition - physical or mental health related - it is important that you access support early on in your degree. This is particularly important for the MA programme which has a shorter duration than a BA degree.

This support will usually be set-up through the Disability and Dyslexia Support Service, who will be able to offer advice about relevant support and, if appropriate, provide us with a Learning Support Plan.

What do I do if extenuating circumstances affect my studies?

[New University policy for 2023-24 coming soon].

During your studies you may experience difficulties which could affect your academic performance. These are known as 'extenuating circumstances' and may include illness; personal problems and other difficult events.

If you experience extenuating circumstances, you should submit an extenuating circumstances form. We would also recommend seeking support, your personal tutor is a good first point of contact.

What if I need to miss a seminar?

[Updated 2023-24 pages coming soon].

It is almost inevitable that illness or personal circumstances will affect your attendance at some point.

If you need to miss a seminar please make sure to email your module tutor - in advance wherever possible - explaining why you are unable to attend.

See the attendance and absences page for more information.
