At the beginning of every art class year we do time capsules. This year I chose the three prompts: "An object that represents your future", "Angle up self portrait", and "An object you despise". 1) For the object of my future I chose a little glass evil eye that's always hanging in the corner of my room. It represents my future because it's supposed to keep me safe from evils and I hope to take it with me and hang it up in every place I live in. 2) The second one was the self portrait. This was a very daunting prompt and I thought about not doing it for a while because of fear of how ugly it might turn out. In the end, I realized it would be kind of fun to make an ugly self portrait from an angle that people wouldn't usually see. I actually ended up liking the double chin self portrait the most because it made me laugh. I wrote "senior photo!" at the top because everyones been talking about senior year and senior photo's so much I thought it would be funny if I joked about that being mine. 3) The last drawing was one of an object I despise and I REALLY despise this object. In my old school, orchestra was a mandatory class and I groaned about taking it every day. I'm not usually musically inclined, but especially not when I'm forced to play the violin. I was a terrible violinist and looking at my old violin reminds me of the dark ages.

For the first painting I used graphite to begin, colored pencil, and watercolors to give it color and a background. The second piece was done on black scratchboard. At first, I drew a basic design with pencil and then traced it with sharp tools to scratch out the black and reveal the white background. I used a big and flat tool to create most of the marks, but went through with a thinner one for details like the hair. For the third drawing I used graphite to sketch and then thin purple and pink markers to trace the violin and create a background.

I wish that I had spent a little more time on my time capsules because they all ended up looking pretty quick work or unfinished. I think I could have added a better background for the picture of the evil eye. More shading and scratching on the self portrait would have given it more dimension and made it more intriguing to look at and added details and color would have made the violin look less like a sketch. Overall, I think the angle up self portrait was my favorite outcome and my favorite process.
