I Love You Anyway
6"x4"
For my fourth Sustained Investigation piece I wanted to try carving and printing. I made a print of a hand holding a teddy bear that only had one eye, one leg, and half an arm. The teddy bear has a lot of imperfections, but I wanted the hand to be holding it tightly and I named it "I Love You Anyway" . When kids have beloved stuffed animals they usually love it even if it's a little gross or broken. My younger sister used to have a little white blanket that she called her "nunu" that was gross and almost brown, but she loved it and slept with it every night. This was sort of my inspiration for the project and I actually used her and one of my old stuffed animals as a model/reference.
To make this project I carved a piece of rubber with some small metal tools. This look a while and I had to do a lot of experimenting because I kept making the markings too shallow and the paint would go through them. Finally, I carved out all the markings and used navy blue ink to print the carving on a piece of cloth. I decided to use cloth because I thought it could be connected to the teddy bear.
