Old Man Stan

7" x 10"

For sustained investigation #10 I made "Old Man Stan". It's a painting of a old man with a big white beard surrounded by the mess in his home. He's sitting, fast asleep, on the couch and has broken cabinets behind him covered in misplaced books, glasses, a mug, and a tipped globe. In the background, there are crooked pictures of him and his wife, a dead plant, and some more mess.

I made "Old Man Stan" with acrylic paint mixed with gesso and black micron pens. I made many different sketches at first. I chose this one and mixed and used a lot of different colors. I didn't really plan out the colors, just chose them as I went and tried to find ones that looked good together. As I went, I added a lot of new details like the underwear and socks hanging on the side of the couch, the little black spiders, and the shoes. I then traced everything with a think black micron pen.

I chose to do this for my sustained investigation #10 because I'm continuing with my question about imperfections and to get some ideas I looked up imperfections on Google. Some synonyms that came up for it were damaged, cracked, incomplete, crummy, and broken. I kind of imagined painting an old man that didn't take care of himself or his house and it lead to it being very messy and destroyed. I like how the final piece turned out with a lot of color and detail.
