Inclusion Project

Artist Statement

The Inclusion project was meant for a contest about inclusion in communities especially focusing on disabilities. I decided to make my piece based around children and a kindergarten because I think kids can be more accepting (sometimes). I drew 5 different kids sitting around an alphabet rug all holding up art that they made except for one kid who is throwing a paper airplane instead of making art. There is a girl with a prosthetic, a boy in a wheel chair, and a boy with a cast. I drew a little banner of numbers in the back. I used oil markers and a thin black marker to make it. I think my favorite part of the process was drawing the little kids paintings because I could make them look however I wanted them to and they didn't have to be very good. My least favorite part of the piece is the lack of background and color. I didn't really have enough time to add more details and at first I thought it'd be fine just to make the little kid's art stand out, but it just looks kind of unfinished. If I feel like it later I might go back in and finish it. I liked the message behind this project and some of the art my classmates made for it was super super cool. Shoutout Galina, I thought her paper collage was really creative.
