Steel

For the second Scholastic project I wanted to make something for a category I didn't already have. I've always been curious about digital art. I still wanted to experiment with the New York Life prompt for the Scholastic competition so I made an envelope "From Steel" and drew some butterflies coming out of it. After he died my friends and I wrote down things we thought he was everyday. One day he was an orange chested bird that we all saw sitting in the road and another day he was the waiter at our restaurant who made us laugh a lot. One day he was a monarch butterfly that had flown in to one of my friend's house while we were all hanging out there. Butterflies have since then become really important to us so I wanted to make a drawing that seemed like the butterflies were a message sent from Steel.
I used my dad's old ipad and a fat stylus on the back of a pen to make the digital art. I downloaded a free art app and just started sketching things out. It actually took me a really long time even though the piece isn't that detailed or complicated because I had to figure out how to use all the different tools on the app since it was my first time trying digital art. It was almost like I had to relearn everything because making art is so different on an ipad. I did several different layers on top of eachother and drew the envelope on the first layer. The second layer was the butterflies and the third was the pink squiggle lines.
I think I could've put more thought in to the composition of the piece to make it more interesting and I want to try again and maybe make the butterflies more realistic and redo the background. Even though I don't like how the end product came out I'm proud of myself for trying digital art and I hope I can practice more because it's something I'd love to be good at.
